FishSoft LLC left early access with Russian Fishing 4 on November 10, 2021 and kept the game free to play. It models 18 reservoirs and more than 230 fish species, with line breaking strain, rod blank test and reel drag all fighting each other while a fish runs. Waterbodies are gated by character level rather than by skill, so Old Burg Lake opens at level 12 and Copper Lake at level 29.
Combat in Russian Fishing 4 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Reel drag and line strain
Line breaking strain, rod blank test and reel drag form a chain that fails at its weakest link. Locking the drag near maximum snaps the line or the rod on the first hard run, and a flame icon on the reel means the brake has overheated and is burning through twice as fast.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Level gated waterbodies
Every waterbody carries a character level requirement and an entry fee. Mosquito Lake and Winding Rivulet are open from the start, Old Burg Lake needs level 12, and Copper Lake needs level 29.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Separate skill percentages
Character level and individual skill percentages advance on different tracks. Harvesting Baits, Making Groundbait, Making Lures and Cooking each climb from their own use and unlock recipes at fixed thresholds, so neglecting one bottlenecks everything downstream of it.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Cafe orders and silver
The cafe posts orders for named species above a minimum weight and pays far above the fish market rate. Sort the keepnet by weight and hand over the smallest fish that still clears the minimum, because size above the threshold earns nothing extra.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Energy, comfort and food
Fighting fish, running, crafting and harvesting bait all drain energy, and low satiation slows how quickly it returns. Comfort sets the regeneration rate, and cooked meals such as fish soup provide long buffs to it.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Reel drag and line strain + Level gated waterbodies
Line breaking strain, rod blank test and reel drag form a chain that fails at its weakest link. When combined with Level gated waterbodies, every waterbody carries a character level requirement and an entry fee. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Separate skill percentages + Cafe orders and silver
Character level and individual skill percentages advance on different tracks. Paired with Cafe orders and silver, the cafe posts orders for named species above a minimum weight and pays far above the fish market rate. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Energy, comfort and food as a Multiplier
Fighting fish, running, crafting and harvesting bait all drain energy, and low satiation slows how quickly it returns. Comfort sets the regeneration rate, and cooked meals such as fish soup provide long buffs to it. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Energy, comfort and food optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Reel drag and line strain for maximum damage windows
- Chain Level gated waterbodies and Separate skill percentages for combo damage
- Use Cafe orders and silver to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Set reel drag around 15 to 20 rather than locking it near maximum. A locked brake transfers the whole fight straight to the line or the blank, and both break instantly on the first hard run from a decent fish.
- Position using Reel drag and line strain to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Level gated waterbodies: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Mosquito Lake but will get you killed in Norwegian Sea.
