Civilization VII arrived in February 2025 and cuts a game into three Ages: Antiquity, Exploration and Modern. Your leader stays with you from the first turn to the last, but the civilization under that leader is chosen again at every Age break, so Egypt can become the Abbasids and then Buganda. Each Age closes with a Crisis, and every settlement except your capital drops back to a town when the next Age opens.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Pyramid of the Sun
  2. Fleet Commander → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Settler → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Army Commander → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Decide which Legacy Path you are chasing inside the first twenty turns of each Age. The paths are scored separately and a half committed empire finishes none of them, while a focused one banks Legacy Points and starts the next Age with a real advantage.
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
