Skul: The Hero Slayer is SouthPAW Games' action roguelite, out of Early Access on 21 January 2021. You play the lowest-ranking skeleton left standing after the Imperial Army and the Adventurers Guild sack the Demon King's castle, and your entire moveset lives in the skull on your shoulders. Carry two at a time, swap between them on a cooldown, and each swap completely changes how you attack. A run climbs five stages, from the Forest of Harmony up through the Grand Hall, the Black Lab and the Fortress of Fate to the Sanctuary, where the First Hero of Carleon is waiting.

Skul: The Hero Slayer features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Forest of Harmony: Starting Area

The first stage, ending at Yggdrasil the Elder Ent. It is the gentlest stage and the one you will see most often, so it is where you should be experimenting with unfamiliar skulls rather than playing safe.

Grand Hall: Early Game

The second stage, guarded by the Leiana Sisters of the Gold Mane Knights. The fight runs in two phases, with the surviving sister awakening after the first goes down, and it is the first real filter on a run.

Recommended BuildGrim Reaper
Key EquipmentRare items

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Skull grades and awakening. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Rare items if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Black Lab.

Black Lab: Mid Game

The third stage, full of test subjects and ending at the Chimera, the Distorted Goddess. Crowds get dense here, which is where ranged skulls such as the Grim Reaper and Archlich start to pull clearly ahead.

Fortress of Fate: Late Game

The fourth stage, ending at Saint Johanna II, Archbishop of the Order of Leonia. By this point a run either has a clear Inscription stack or it does not, and the fortress punishes the difference immediately.

Key RewardsLegendary drops, the last chance to fix a build before the Sanctuary

Key EquipmentCommon items

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Common items should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Adventurers and stage bosses mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Sanctuary.

Sanctuary: Endgame

The fifth and final stage, ending at the First Hero, wielder of the Sword of Carleon. It is a pure test of whether your two skulls cover each other, because there is no safe distance the fight does not eventually close.

DifficultyStage 5 of 5
Key RewardsRun completion, the largest Dark Quartz payout, access to harder modes
Recommended BuildLittle Bone
Key EquipmentCommon items

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Living Armor for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Forest of Harmony → Grand Hall → Black Lab → Fortress of Fate → Sanctuary. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
