Starfield Crafting Guide — Resources, Recipes & Priorities

Starfield crafting guide covering resource gathering, upgrade priorities, crafting recipes, and efficiency tips.

Starfield is Bethesda's space RPG with over 1,000 explorable planets across 100+ star systems. The game's strongest elements are its ship-building system (where you can design custom vessels from modular parts), its faction questlines (Crimson Fleet pirates, UC Vanguard military, Freestar Rangers), and the New Game Plus system that's actually story-relevant rather than just a difficulty reset. Ground combat is competent with satisfying gunplay and a robust skill system. The Shattered Space expansion adds a handcrafted open world that addresses the procedural content concerns from launch.

Resource management and crafting determine how quickly your power scales. This guide covers what to prioritize, where to farm, and how to avoid wasting resources on the wrong upgrades.

Upgrade Path

Early Game (New Atlantis — Akila City)

  1. Upgrade your starting equipment to functional level
  2. Craft basic defensive gear
  3. Save specialty materials — you'll need them later
  4. Focus on Hard Target once accessible

Mid Game (Neon)

  1. Push Hard Target to mid-level upgrades
  2. Start collecting materials for Magshear
  3. Craft situational consumables for boss fights
  4. Upgrade build-specific gear pieces

Late Game (The Lodge — The Eye)

  1. Max out Magshear — this is your top priority
  2. Complete your build's core gear set
  3. Craft endgame consumables
  4. Optional: upgrade secondary equipment for variety

Crafting Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Spreading upgrades across multiple equipment — Focus one weapon to max before diversifying.
  2. Hoarding materials — Use them. The game provides enough if you farm efficiently.
  3. Upgrading the wrong gear — Check our builds guide before investing.
  4. Ignoring Neon farming — This area has the best resource-to-time ratio in mid-game.
  5. Crafting consumables too early — Save specialty materials for late-game recipes.

Resource Efficiency Tips

  • The Mantis questline (triggered by finding the 'Secret Outpost!' note on a Spacer body) gives you the Razorleaf ship and Mantis spacesuit FOR FREE early in the game. It's the best early-game quest to complete.
  • Farm Neon during mid-game for the best return on time
  • Check the walkthrough to know when each resource becomes available
  • Match your farming route to your build — some classes farm faster in certain areas
