This Starfield tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.
Builds Rankings
| Tier | Build | Rating | Playstyle |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Stealth Build | 9.5/10 | Crouch, suppress your weapon, and eliminate enemies before they detect you. Stealth multiplier damage makes even weak weapons lethal. |
| A | Gunslinger | 8.5/10 | Engage at mid-range with the assault rifle, switch to pistol for close encounters, and use VATS-like targeting for critical headshots. |
| B | Melee | 7.5/10 | Boost-pack dash into melee range, dodge with boost-pack thrust, and combo enemies with heavy melee attacks. Use grenades for groups. |
| S | Pilot Build | 9.5/10 | Build a powerful custom ship, target enemy engines to disable ships for boarding, and dominate space encounters. Board disabled ships to steal their cargo and crew. |
| A | Science Explorer | 8.5/10 | Survey planets from orbit, land on promising worlds, scan all flora/fauna for XP, and build outpost networks for passive resource generation. |
Detailed Builds Analysis
Stealth Build (S-Tier)
Stealth in Starfield is powerful — maxed Stealth skill makes you nearly invisible in dark areas. Suppressed weapons deal massive stealth multiplier damage. The Razorleaf ship (found in early Mantis questline) provides a free early upgrade. Stealth handles most encounters by eliminating enemies before they react.
Best with: Suppressed Magshear, Razorleaf ship, Chameleon spacesuit mod, Sense Star Stuff (Rank 4 perk) Stat focus: Stealth 4, Rifle Certification 4, Concealment, Sniper Certification
Gunslinger (A-Tier)
Pistol and ballistic weapon focus with perks enhancing damage, fire rate, and critical hits. The Keelhauler unique pistol is one of the best weapons in the game with its legendary effects. Ballistic weapons use the most common ammo type, so you'll never run dry.
Best with: Keelhauler, Old Earth Assault Rifle, Ballistic Weapons skill 4, Marksmanship 4 Stat focus: Ballistics 4, Pistol Certification 4, Marksmanship, Crit damage perks
Melee (B-Tier)
Melee builds using Va'ruun Painblade or Tanto are viable but require closing distance against enemies with guns. Boost pack movement is essential for gap-closing. Melee damage perks stack to make hits devastating. More challenging than ranged builds but satisfying.
Best with: Va'ruun Painblade, Boost Pack (balanced), melee damage perks, Combat Fitness Stat focus: Dueling 4, Martial Arts, Boost Pack Training 4, Fitness
Pilot Build (S-Tier)
Pilot builds maximize ship combat effectiveness with Piloting skill (unlock Class B/C ships), Targeting Control Systems (target enemy ship systems), and Ship Command (crew size). A custom Class C ship with particle beam weapons dominates space combat. The Pilot build also enables ship boarding for unique loot.
Best with: Custom Class C ship, Particle Beam weapons, targeting systems, max crew Stat focus: Piloting 4, Targeting Control 4, Ship Command 4, Energy Weapons Systems
Science Explorer (A-Tier)
Science builds focus on scanning, research, and outpost building. Astrophysics reveals planetary traits from orbit, Scanning reveals all flora/fauna, and Outpost Engineering enables advanced extractors. The exploration gameplay loop of scanning planets, cataloguing life, and building outpost networks is deeply satisfying.
Best with: Scanner, Research Lab, Outpost modules, survey data Stat focus: Astrophysics 4, Scanning 4, Outpost Engineering 4, Botany/Geology
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Magshear | Stealth Build | An electromagnetic rifle that fires metal shards at extreme velocity. |
| Hard Target | Stealth Build | A powerful sniper rifle with the highest per-shot damage among non-unique weapons. |
| Keelhauler | Gunslinger | A unique legendary pistol found during the Crimson Fleet questline. |
| Old Earth Assault Rifle | Gunslinger | A reliable ballistic rifle with good damage, range, and common ammo. |
| Revenant | Gunslinger | A unique legendary rifle with rapid fire rate and ammo-efficient legendary effects. |
Equipment Analysis
Magshear: An electromagnetic rifle that fires metal shards at extreme velocity. High damage, good range, and satisfying sound design. Found in mid-game vendors and as drops. The Magshear is one of the best general-purpose weapons that stays relevant throughout the game.
Hard Target: A powerful sniper rifle with the highest per-shot damage among non-unique weapons. Ideal for stealth builds where the first shot needs to kill. Suppressed with a long scope, it eliminates enemies at extreme range without alerting others.
Keelhauler: A unique legendary pistol found during the Crimson Fleet questline. It has multiple legendary effects (extra damage, stagger chance) making it one of the best weapons in the game regardless of build. Quest reward from siding with or betraying the Crimson Fleet.
Old Earth Assault Rifle: A reliable ballistic rifle with good damage, range, and common ammo. Modifiable with scopes, barrels, and magazines. The OEAR is the AK-47 of Starfield — not flashy but consistently effective. Available early from vendors.
Revenant: A unique legendary rifle with rapid fire rate and ammo-efficient legendary effects. Found as a random legendary drop — check weapon vendors regularly. When it appears with good legendary mods, it outperforms most other rifles in sustained DPS.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Starfield centers on shipbuilding and outpost system. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.
What's strong right now:
- Stealth Build with Magshear is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- NG+ system builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
- Melee remains essential for learning hard content.
What's underrated:
- Gunslinger is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Keelhauler offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Science Explorer builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
