Subnautica drops you alone on an alien ocean planet after your spaceship crashes, and what follows is one of the best survival games ever made. The game masterfully creates fear through depth — the deeper you dive, the darker it gets, the more dangerous the creatures become, and the more incredible the discoveries are. There are no guns (by deliberate design choice), forcing you to rely on evasion, tools, and vehicles to survive. The story unfolds organically through radio signals, data logs, and environmental storytelling, guiding you ever deeper toward answers about the planet, the alien disease you've contracted, and how to escape. Nearly every player remembers their first encounter with a Reaper Leviathan.
Subnautica features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order — what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Safe Shallows | 0-40m depth | Basic materials (Titanium, Quartz, Copper), Table Coral, Acid Mushrooms, first base location | PRAWN Miner |
| 2 | Kelp Forest | 40-100m depth | Creepvine, Silver Ore, Stalker Teeth, Seamoth fragments | PRAWN Miner |
| 3 | Lost River | 500-900m depth | Nickel Ore, Disease Research Facility, Precursor data, Ghost Leviathan encounter | Seamoth Explorer |
| 4 | Lava Zone | 1200-1700m depth | Kyanite, Primary Containment Facility, Sea Emperor, Hatching Enzymes (cure), Ion Power Cell blueprints | Seamoth Explorer |
| 5 | Crash Zone | 0-300m depth (heavy radiation) | PRAWN Suit blueprints, Cyclops blueprints, Seamoth depth modules, Nuclear Reactor, Laser Cutter (needed to access rooms) | Seamoth Explorer |
Safe Shallows — Starting Area
The starting biome directly around your lifepod. Shallow water (0-40m) with abundant basic resources and harmless fish. This is where you build your first base, craft basic tools, and learn game mechanics. No predators except the occasional Gasopod at the edges.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | 0-40m depth |
| Key Rewards | Basic materials (Titanium, Quartz, Copper), Table Coral, Acid Mushrooms, first base location |
| Recommended Build | PRAWN Miner |
| Key Equipment | Stasis Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of base building — this is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Kelp Forest.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Kelp Forest — Early Game
Dense kelp forests surrounding the Safe Shallows with Stalkers (aggressive shark-like predators) that collect metal salvage. Stalkers drop their teeth when biting metal — Stalker Teeth are needed for Enameled Glass. The Kelp Forest has Creepvine (silicone rubber) and Silver Ore in sandstone outcrops.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | 40-100m depth |
| Key Rewards | Creepvine, Silver Ore, Stalker Teeth, Seamoth fragments |
| Recommended Build | PRAWN Miner |
| Key Equipment | Stasis Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering vehicle crafting — it's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Stasis Rifle if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Lost River.
Lost River — Mid Game
A massive underground cave system at 500-900m with brine rivers (acidic green fluid that damages you) and the Ghost Leviathan juvenile. Contains the Disease Research Facility — a major story location with alien data. The Lost River is the gateway to the deeper Inactive Lava Zone.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | 500-900m depth |
| Key Rewards | Nickel Ore, Disease Research Facility, Precursor data, Ghost Leviathan encounter |
| Recommended Build | Seamoth Explorer |
| Key Equipment | Stasis Rifle |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Survival Knife becomes accessible here — prioritize getting it.
- Master depth progression for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Lava Zone — Late Game
The deepest accessible biome at 1200-1700m, filled with volcanic activity, Sea Dragon Leviathans, and the Primary Containment Facility (where the Sea Emperor lives). The thermal environment heats your PRAWN suit, and the Sea Dragon Leviathan shoots fireballs. This is where the story concludes.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | 1200-1700m depth |
| Key Rewards | Kyanite, Primary Containment Facility, Sea Emperor, Hatching Enzymes (cure), Ion Power Cell blueprints |
| Recommended Build | Seamoth Explorer |
| Key Equipment | Survival Knife |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Survival Knife should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- alien research mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Crash Zone.
Crash Zone — Endgame
The wreckage of the Aurora spaceship with heavy radiation requiring a Radiation Suit. The Crash Zone is patrolled by multiple Reaper Leviathans — the game's most famous terror. Inside the Aurora wreck you find the PRAWN Suit blueprints, Seamoth depth modules, and the nuclear reactor. Essential to explore but terrifying.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | 0-300m depth (heavy radiation) |
| Key Rewards | PRAWN Suit blueprints, Cyclops blueprints, Seamoth depth modules, Nuclear Reactor, Laser Cutter (needed to access rooms) |
| Recommended Build | Seamoth Explorer |
| Key Equipment | Survival Knife |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Speedrunner for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order — Safe Shallows → Kelp Forest → Lost River → Lava Zone → Crash Zone. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner — Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment — Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough — Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush — Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
