Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a dark open-world survival RPG set in a grim reimagining of Arthurian legend where the Holy Grail's power is fading and corruption spreads across the land. Based on the acclaimed board game, it translates the card-based combat and exploration into a first-person RPG with survival mechanics. The Menhir system — ancient standing stones that must be kept lit or monsters overrun the land — creates constant tension between exploration and base defense. The game entered Early Access with a strong foundation and has been steadily adding content including new areas, quests, and the settlement management system.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Avalon
- Bone Staff → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Runic Shield → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Wyrd Sword → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Keep at least 3 Menhir fuel items in your inventory at all times. Running out while exploring far from home can be a death sentence.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
