Naughty Dog rebuilt the 2013 original on the Part II engine, so Joel and Ellie's trip across a fungal-collapsed United States now runs on modern AI, lighting and animation. The package includes the Left Behind chapter and drops the original Factions multiplayer entirely. The PC port shipped in July 2023 through Iron Galaxy and took several patches before shader compilation and memory use settled down.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Boston Quarantine Zone)
FEDRA-run ruins where Joel smuggles for Robert and picks up Ellie. Combat is mostly human until the flooded museum wing introduces Runners and the first Clicker.
Level/Difficulty: Opening chapters Key Rewards: First pistol, first shiv, early Firefly Pendants
What to Do in Boston Quarantine Zone
- Learn Listen Mode. Holding the listen button outlines enemies through walls within a limited radius, but only while you stay still or move at a crawl. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Shiv and bottle specialist as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
- Parts do not respawn and a single playthrough never funds every upgrade. Pour them into the Hunting Rifle scope and the Shotgun clip first, because those two weapons carry the Fall and Winter encounters where ammunition pressure is worst.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade: Hunting Rifle or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Listen Mode fundamentals
- Shiv and bottle specialist selected and functional
- Boston Quarantine Zone main content cleared
- Ready for Bill's Town
Phase 2: Early Game (Bill's Town)
Lincoln, Massachusetts, wired with traps by a paranoid survivalist. The high school gym Bloater fight is the first real setpiece and the town hides several workbench caches.
Level/Difficulty: Summer Key Rewards: Nail bomb training manual, Parts caches, the truck battery detour
What to Do in Bill's Town
- Work on Workbench weapon upgrades. Workbenches spend Parts on holster speed, reload speed, magazine size, fire rate, damage and scope stability per weapon. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Hunting Rifle if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Melee weapons shatter after a few swings unless a workbench binding upgrade is applied. Carry one blunt weapon for stunning humans and reserve shivs strictly for Clickers and locked shiv doors.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Pittsburgh.
- Consider whether Full stealth strangler might suit your playstyle better than Shiv and bottle specialist.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Workbench weapon upgrades integrated into gameplay
- Hunting Rifle acquired
- Bill's Town fully cleared
- Ready for Pittsburgh
Phase 3: Mid Game (Pittsburgh)
Hunter ambush territory, a full city of human enemies who take cover, flank and call your position. The hotel basement generator sequence traps you in the dark with Clickers and a Bloater.
Level/Difficulty: Fall approach Key Rewards: Shorty shotgun, large Parts caches, Henry and Sam
What to Do in Pittsburgh
- Master Crafting from scavenged parts. Alcohol, rags, blades, binding, sugar and explosives combine into shivs, molotovs, nail bombs, smoke bombs and health kits, and every item is crafted in real time with no pause. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward 9mm Pistol. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Bricks and bottles respawn on most maps and do more work than bullets. A thrown bottle pulls an enemy to a fixed spot, and a brick to the face opens a free melee execution that costs no resources at all.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Supplement skill upgrades for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Crafting from scavenged parts mastered
- 9mm Pistol acquired or in progress
- Pittsburgh fully cleared
- Ready for University of Eastern Colorado
Phase 4: Late Game (University of Eastern Colorado)
An abandoned campus the Fireflies left months earlier. The research wing and dorm rooms hide comics and Parts, and the exit is a running fight against Infected and raiders at once.
Level/Difficulty: Fall Key Rewards: Assault rifle, comics, workbench upgrades
What to Do in University of Eastern Colorado
- Finalize your build. You should be running Full stealth strangler or Shiv and bottle specialist with optimized gear.
- 9mm Pistol should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Clickers cannot see you. They navigate entirely by sound, so crouch walking past one in the open works, while sprinting past one across the room does not.
- Infected enemy types optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Lakeside Resort.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- 9mm Pistol upgraded to max
- University of Eastern Colorado fully cleared
- Ready for Lakeside Resort
Phase 5: Endgame (Lakeside Resort)
Ellie alone against David's group in a snowbound Colorado tourist town. Ammunition is scarce and the burning restaurant finale is the only true one on one fight in the game.
Level/Difficulty: Winter Key Rewards: Hunting rifle ammo, machete, Ellie's story resolution
What to Do in Lakeside Resort
- Lakeside Resort tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Choking a human from behind is silent and free, but the animation locks you in place for several seconds. Check the patrol timing of the next two enemies before committing, because being spotted mid choke usually loses the encounter.
- The endgame loop: run Lakeside Resort, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Brawler with melee weapons for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Infected enemy types mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Lakeside Resort fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Spreading Parts evenly across every weapon, so no gun is upgraded enough to matter during Pittsburgh and Winter.
- Punching Clickers. Bare-handed melee against a Clicker is an instant death animation unless you are holding a shiv.
- Burning shivs as combat weapons and then finding a shiv door with nothing left to open it.
- Sprinting through Infected areas because they look clear. Runners reposition and Stalkers deliberately hide in doorways you already walked past.
- Skipping the workbench holster upgrade. Slow weapon swaps turn a single mistake into a wipe when a Clicker closes distance.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Parts do not respawn and a single playthrough never funds every upgrade. Pour them into the Hunting Rifle scope and the Shotgun clip first, because those two weapons carry the Fall and Winter encounters where ammunition pressure is worst.
- Melee weapons shatter after a few swings unless a workbench binding upgrade is applied. Carry one blunt weapon for stunning humans and reserve shivs strictly for Clickers and locked shiv doors.
- Bricks and bottles respawn on most maps and do more work than bullets. A thrown bottle pulls an enemy to a fixed spot, and a brick to the face opens a free melee execution that costs no resources at all.
- Clickers cannot see you. They navigate entirely by sound, so crouch walking past one in the open works, while sprinting past one across the room does not.
- Choking a human from behind is silent and free, but the animation locks you in place for several seconds. Check the patrol timing of the next two enemies before committing, because being spotted mid choke usually loses the encounter.
