The Long Dark is a first-person survival game set in the frozen Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies, no monsters — just the cold, starvation, wildlife, and your own mistakes. The game is a masterclass in tension through simplicity: every match lit, every calorie consumed, and every degree of warmth matters. Survival mode is an open-ended sandbox where the goal is simply to survive as long as possible. The Story mode (Wintermute) tells a narrative across five episodes. The game's art style (painterly landscapes) creates hauntingly beautiful environments that also want to kill you.
The Long Dark features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order — what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order

Mystery Lake — Starting Area
The most beginner-friendly region with the Camp Office (excellent base), abundant wildlife, and moderate weather. Contains Carter Hydro Dam connecting to Pleasant Valley. Mystery Lake has the best balance of shelter, resources, and hunting.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Starting region |
| Key Rewards | Camp Office base, abundant deer, rifle spawn locations, workbench |
| Recommended Build | Voyageur |
| Key Equipment | Distress Pistol |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of temperature management — this is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Coastal Highway.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Coastal Highway — Early Game
A coastline region with scattered houses and the Quonset Gas Station (good base). Beachcombing provides unique resources. The region connects Mystery Lake to Desolation Point (which has a forge). Weather is windier than Mystery Lake.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early-mid survival |
| Key Rewards | Quonset Gas Station, fishing huts, forge access (via Desolation Point) |
| Recommended Build | Voyageur |
| Key Equipment | Distress Pistol |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering wildlife encounters — it's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Distress Pistol if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Pleasant Valley.
Pleasant Valley — Mid Game
A large open valley with extreme blizzards and the Farmstead (best mid-game base). Pleasant Valley is dangerous due to its open terrain exposing you to wind and wildlife. The Community Center and farmhouses provide scattered shelter.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid survival |
| Key Rewards | Pleasant Valley Farmstead, Thomson's Crossing, large hunting grounds |
| Recommended Build | Pilgrim |
| Key Equipment | Distress Pistol |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Hunting Rifle becomes accessible here — prioritize getting it.
- Master crafting from hides for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Timberwolf Mountain — Late Game
A vertical mountain region culminating at the Summit with a crashed cargo plane. The Summit contains the best loot cache in the game — multiple rifles, clothing, and supplies. Getting there requires rope climbing, which damages condition. No permanent shelters.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Advanced |
| Key Rewards | Summit loot cache (best in game), Mountaineering Rope climbs, high-tier clothing |
| Recommended Build | Pilgrim |
| Key Equipment | Hunting Rifle |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Hunting Rifle should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- condition decay mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Bleak Inlet.
Bleak Inlet — Endgame
A coastal industrial zone with Timberwolves (pack wolves). Contains the Cannery Workshop — a forge location with a milling machine for crafting ammunition. The Timberwolf mechanic (morale-based pack attacks) makes this the most dangerous region.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Advanced-Expert |
| Key Rewards | Ammunition crafting (milling machine), forge, Timberwolf encounters |
| Recommended Build | Pilgrim |
| Key Equipment | Hunting Rifle |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Custom for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order — Mystery Lake → Coastal Highway → Pleasant Valley → Timberwolf Mountain → Bleak Inlet. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner — Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment — Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough — Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush — Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
