Equipment Analysis

Ji Militia: Light halberd infantry armed with ji polearms, cheap and available to every general from the opening turn. Their job is holding cavalry off your archers, not winning an infantry melee.

Sabre Militia Cavalry: Cheap shielded cavalry that blocks incoming arrows and holds together in a prolonged melee, making them the budget answer to enemy missile units.

Crossbowmen: Missile infantry with the punch to hurt armoured targets at range. A Strategist boosts his retinue's ammunition, so a crossbow line under one lasts noticeably longer.

Tiger and Leopard Cavalry: Cao Cao's faction unique elite cavalry in partial iron armour with shields, recruitable by his generals at rank 3 and in a heavy version at rank 6. They are built to hunt missile units.

White Horse Fellows: Gongsun Zan's unique light bow cavalry, one of the strongest early tools on the whole campaign map because horse archers punish slow infantry armies badly.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in Total War: THREE KINGDOMS centers on Romance and Records modes and Five hero classes and Wu Xing attributes. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.

What's strong right now:

  • Vanguard with Ji Militia is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • General retinues builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
  • Commander remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.

What's underrated:

  • Sentinel is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • Crossbowmen offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure Champion builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
