Warhammer 40K: Darktide Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Warhammer 40K: Darktide walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is Fatshark's co-op FPS set in the grim darkness of the far future, where four players fight through Hive City Tertium against hordes of heretics, mutants, and Chaos-corrupted enemies. Building on the Vermintide formula, Darktide replaces fantasy melee with the Warhammer 40K universe's blend of brutal melee and ranged combat. The game's atmosphere captures the oppressive industrial gothic of 40K perfectly — every mission drips with grime, decay, and fanatical devotion to the God-Emperor. Major updates in 2024-2025 overhauled the crafting system (removing despised RNG locks), added new classes, and expanded the mission pool, addressing the rocky launch complaints.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Hive City Tertium

The overarching setting — a massive hive city on the planet Atoma Prime. All missions take place in different sectors of the hive. The oppressive gothic industrial atmosphere defines every environment.

Level/Difficulty: All difficulties Key Rewards: All mission rewards, story context

What to Do in Hive City Tertium

  1. Learn class abilities. Four classes — Veteran Sharpshooter, Zealot Preacher, Ogryn Skullbreaker, and Psyker Psykinetic — each have three talent tree paths (Keystones) providing distinct playstyles. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Zealot Preacher as your starting role. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Toughness regenerates when near teammates (coherency bonus). Stay within 15 meters of at least one ally to maintain toughness recovery. Isolated players lose their toughness buffer and die quickly.
  4. Acquire your first weapons upgrade — Power Sword or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand class abilities fundamentals
  • Zealot Preacher selected and functional
  • Hive City Tertium main content cleared
  • Ready for Hab Block

Phase 2: Early Game — Hab Block

Residential sectors of the hive with narrow corridors and apartment blocks. Close-quarters combat in tight spaces favors melee classes. Ranged enemies use cover from doorways and windows.

Level/Difficulty: Sedition-Heresy Key Rewards: Standard mission rewards, close-quarters combat experience

What to Do in Hab Block

  1. Work on horde combat. Missions throw waves of 50-100+ enemies with mixed melee and ranged compositions. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Power Sword if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. The Veteran's Volley Fire ability highlights elite enemies through walls and hordes. Activate it when you hear the audio cue for special/elite spawns to immediately identify and eliminate threats.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Refinery.
  5. Consider whether Veteran Sharpshooter might suit your playstyle better than Zealot Preacher.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • horde combat integrated into gameplay
  • Power Sword acquired
  • Hab Block fully cleared
  • Ready for Refinery

Phase 3: Mid Game — Refinery

Industrial processing areas with large open rooms and catwalks. The open spaces favor ranged combat while catwalks create elevation advantages. Some of the most intense horde events occur in refinery missions.

Level/Difficulty: Malice-Damnation Key Rewards: Ranged combat opportunities, horde defense experience

What to Do in Refinery

  1. Master crafting system. Post-overhaul crafting allows rerolling weapon perks and blessings without random locks. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Bolter. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Dodge is significantly more effective than blocking against most attacks. Side dodges have invincibility frames. Learn the dodge timing against Pox Hound leaps and Mutant charges.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in mission modifiers for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • crafting system mastered
  • Bolter acquired or in progress
  • Refinery fully cleared
  • Ready for Carnival

Phase 4: Late Game — Carnival

The twisted Nurgle-corrupted sections of the hive with disgusting organic growth and disease. Environmental hazards include toxic clouds and corrupted terrain. Visually striking and atmospherically disturbing.

Level/Difficulty: Heresy-Damnation Key Rewards: Atmospheric experience, challenging environmental hazards

What to Do in Carnival

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Veteran Sharpshooter or Zealot Preacher with optimized gear.
  2. Bolter should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Crafting priorities: find a weapon with high base stats (380+), then roll for the right Blessings. A perfect Blessing on a low-stat weapon is worse than a decent Blessing on a high-stat weapon.
  4. penance challenges optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Smelter Complex.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Bolter upgraded to max
  • Carnival fully cleared
  • Ready for Smelter Complex

Phase 5: Endgame — Smelter Complex

The foundry areas with extreme heat hazards and molten metal. Gameplay features moving platforms, conveyor belts, and environmental kill zones. Some of the most mechanically complex missions.

Level/Difficulty: Malice-Damnation Key Rewards: Environmental mechanics, complex mission objectives

What to Do in Smelter Complex

  1. Smelter Complex tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Difficulty 4 (Heresy) is where the real Darktide experience begins. Specials are frequent, hordes are dense, and team coordination matters. Push to Heresy as soon as your gear allows.
  3. The endgame loop: run Smelter Complex, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with All Classes for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where penance challenges mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Smelter Complex fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Breaking coherency (wandering away from teammates). Darktide punishes isolation more severely than any similar game. Toughness stops regenerating and specials pin you with no one to help.
  • Veteran using all ammo on horde enemies instead of saving for elites/specials. A Veteran who's empty when a Reaper or Sniper spawns costs the team its most effective counter.
  • Crafting with low-stat weapons hoping for perfect Blessings. Base stats matter more — a 380+ stat weapon with decent Blessings outperforms a 340 stat weapon with perfect Blessings.
  • Ignoring the dodge mechanic and relying on blocking. Blocking drains stamina quickly and leaves you vulnerable to attacks from other directions. Dodge has i-frames and costs no stamina.
  • Pushing to Damnation difficulty (5) without understanding Heresy (4) mechanics. Damnation adds Auric modifiers that multiply difficulty. Master Heresy first.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Toughness regenerates when near teammates (coherency bonus). Stay within 15 meters of at least one ally to maintain toughness recovery. Isolated players lose their toughness buffer and die quickly.
  2. The Veteran's Volley Fire ability highlights elite enemies through walls and hordes. Activate it when you hear the audio cue for special/elite spawns to immediately identify and eliminate threats.
  3. Dodge is significantly more effective than blocking against most attacks. Side dodges have invincibility frames. Learn the dodge timing against Pox Hound leaps and Mutant charges.
  4. Crafting priorities: find a weapon with high base stats (380+), then roll for the right Blessings. A perfect Blessing on a low-stat weapon is worse than a decent Blessing on a high-stat weapon.
  5. Difficulty 4 (Heresy) is where the real Darktide experience begins. Specials are frequent, hordes are dense, and team coordination matters. Push to Heresy as soon as your gear allows.
