World's Edge and Forgotten Empires rebuilt the 2002 Ensemble Studios strategy game and shipped it on 4 September 2024, keeping the Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Atlantean pantheons and rewriting the parts that had aged badly. The largest change is that god powers are no longer single use: the first cast is free and every reuse costs favor on a ramping scale, so Bolt at 75 favor becomes a tool rather than a one time trick. Freyr joined the Norse as a fourth major god, and the Immortal Pillars expansion on 4 March 2025 added the Chinese pantheon with Fuxi, Nuwa and Shennong plus a nine level campaign called Pillars of the Gods. Each pantheon generates favor by a completely different method, which is what makes the matchups feel unlike any other real time strategy game.
Boss fights are where Age of Mythology: Retold tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.
Boss Difficulty Overview

|---|---|---|---|

| Midgard | Moderate | Egyptian | Medusa |
| Marsh | Hard | Greek | Minotaur |
| Mediterranean | Very Hard | Greek | Minotaur |
| Ghost Lake | Extreme | Greek | Minotaur |
Anatolia Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: 1v1 and 2v2, land focused Recommended build: Egyptian with Medusa
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. The first cast of any god power is free. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Reusable god powers with ramping favor costs to create safe windows.
- Medusa is enough to handle everything here.
Midgard Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: 1v1 through 4v4, mixed land and water Recommended build: Egyptian with Medusa
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Five pantheons with separate favor economies. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Five pantheons with separate favor economies is critical for these fights.
- Farm Medusa upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Egyptian if your current setup isn't working.
Marsh Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: 1v1 and team games Recommended build: Greek with Minotaur
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Reusable god powers with ramping favor costs and Minor god picks at every age up mastery.
- Minotaur makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Mediterranean Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: 2v2 and 4v4 team games Recommended build: Greek with Minotaur
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Minotaur at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Ghost Lake Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: 1v1 and 2v2 Recommended build: Greek with Minotaur
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Minotaur trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Reusable god powers with ramping favor costs: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
