ARK: Survival Evolved Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step ARK: Survival Evolved walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

ARK: Survival Evolved is Studio Wildcard's open-world survival game where you wake up on a mysterious island filled with dinosaurs that you can tame, ride, and breed. The game features a massive progression system from stone tools to tek-tier science fiction technology. With 10+ official maps, hundreds of creatures, and a breeding system so deep it resembles competitive Pokemon, ARK has consumed thousands of hours from millions of players despite its notoriously demanding system requirements.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — The Island

The original map and the best starting point for new players. Contains all biomes (beach, jungle, snow, swamp, volcano, caves). Three bosses (Broodmother, Megapithecus, Dragon) and the Tek Cave endgame. The most documented map with extensive community guides.

Level/Difficulty: All levels Key Rewards: All basic Tekgrams, full progression path, Tek Cave ascension

What to Do in The Island

  1. Learn dinosaur taming. Taming involves knocking a creature unconscious (Tranq Arrows/Darts) then feeding it its preferred food (Raw Meat for carnivores, Berries/Crops for herbivores, Kibble for fast taming). Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Giganotosaurus as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Tame a Pteranodon early for mobility — it requires Raw Meat and Tranq Arrows. A Pteranodon transforms your gameplay from crawling on the beach to flying anywhere.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Tek Rifle or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand dinosaur taming fundamentals
  • Giganotosaurus selected and functional
  • The Island main content cleared
  • Ready for Scorched Earth

Phase 2: Early Game — Scorched Earth

The first DLC map — a harsh desert with extreme heat, sandstorms, and unique creatures like the Wyvern and Rock Elemental. Wyvern eggs are stolen from nests in the Wyvern Trench, requiring a fast flying tame. Tough for beginners.

Level/Difficulty: Intermediate+ Key Rewards: Wyverns, Phoenix, Mantis, unique desert resources

What to Do in Scorched Earth

  1. Work on breeding and mutations. Bred creatures can inherit the best stats from both parents and have a chance of color and stat mutations. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Tek Rifle if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Narcoberries keep tames unconscious but Narcotics are far more efficient (5 Narcoberries + 1 Spoiled Meat = 1 Narcotic with 8x the torpor). Always craft Narcotics for taming.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Aberration.
  5. Consider whether Rex might suit your playstyle better than Giganotosaurus.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • breeding and mutations integrated into gameplay
  • Tek Rifle acquired
  • Scorched Earth fully cleared
  • Ready for Aberration

Phase 3: Mid Game — Aberration

An underground map with bioluminescent zones, radiation, and no flying tames. Features unique creatures like Rock Drakes, Reapers, and Karkinos. The most unique ARK experience. Radiation zone requires a Hazard Suit or special tames.

Level/Difficulty: Advanced Key Rewards: Rock Drake, Reaper, Aberrant creatures, unique resources

What to Do in Aberration

  1. Master boss fights. Each map has 3+ bosses fought in arenas accessed through tribute terminals (requiring specific items). This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Fabricated Sniper Rifle. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Build in stone or metal to avoid Alpha creature and raiding damage. Thatch and wood bases get destroyed by wild dinos and players trivially.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in tek tier progression for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • boss fights mastered
  • Fabricated Sniper Rifle acquired or in progress
  • Aberration fully cleared
  • Ready for Ragnarok

Phase 4: Late Game — Ragnarok

The largest free map with diverse biomes and the best overall experience. Contains Wyvern trenches, Ice Wyverns, Griffin spawns, and extensive cave systems. Community-made but officially adopted. The most popular map for unofficial servers.

Level/Difficulty: All levels Key Rewards: All Wyvern types, Griffins, diverse resources, massive buildable area

What to Do in Ragnarok

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Rex or Giganotosaurus with optimized gear.
  2. Fabricated Sniper Rifle should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Breeding can stack mutations for OP stats — focus on one stat at a time (usually melee), breed the mutated offspring back into clean females, and track your lineage.
  4. base defense optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Fjordur.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Fabricated Sniper Rifle upgraded to max
  • Ragnarok fully cleared
  • Ready for Fjordur

Phase 5: Endgame — Fjordur

A Norse-themed free map with realm teleportation (Asgard, Jotunheim, Vanaheim). Contains the Desmodus bat, Andrewsarchus, and Fenrir boss fight. Three portals lead to different dimensions with unique creatures and resources.

Level/Difficulty: All levels Key Rewards: Desmodus, Andrewsarchus, Fjordhawk, Fenrir Tekgrams

What to Do in Fjordur

  1. Fjordur tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Cryopods let you carry dinos anywhere in your inventory, making transport trivial. Craft them at the Supply Crate terminal or Obelisk.
  3. The endgame loop: run Fjordur, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Desmodus for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where base defense mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Fjordur fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Building a thatch/wood base on PvP — even a Level 1 player can destroy wood structures. Build in stone minimum, metal preferred.
  • Not making Narcotics for taming — trying to tame with raw Narcoberries takes forever and wastes hundreds of berries. One Narcotic equals 8 Narcoberries worth of torpor.
  • Ignoring breeding because it seems complex — bred creatures with mutations are 5-10x stronger than wild tames. Start breeding Rexes early for boss fights.
  • Putting all level-up points into Weight or Melee on your character — you need Health (300+) and Stamina (200+) to survive. Movement Speed helps explore safely.
  • Not placing your dinos on Neutral or Attack My Target — leaving tames on Passive means they die without fighting back when attacked by wild dinos or players.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Tame a Pteranodon early for mobility — it requires Raw Meat and Tranq Arrows. A Pteranodon transforms your gameplay from crawling on the beach to flying anywhere.
  2. Narcoberries keep tames unconscious but Narcotics are far more efficient (5 Narcoberries + 1 Spoiled Meat = 1 Narcotic with 8x the torpor). Always craft Narcotics for taming.
  3. Build in stone or metal to avoid Alpha creature and raiding damage. Thatch and wood bases get destroyed by wild dinos and players trivially.
  4. Breeding can stack mutations for OP stats — focus on one stat at a time (usually melee), breed the mutated offspring back into clean females, and track your lineage.
  5. Cryopods let you carry dinos anywhere in your inventory, making transport trivial. Craft them at the Supply Crate terminal or Obelisk.
