This ARK: Survival Evolved tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Detailed Builds Analysis
Rex (S-Tier)
The primary boss-fighting creature with massive HP and melee damage. Breed Rexes with 30k+ HP and 1000%+ melee for endgame bosses. A team of 19 Rexes with a Yutyrannus support handles most bosses. They're also excellent base defenders and PvP mounts.
Best with: Mastercraft Rex Saddle, Imprinted baby Rex, Yutyrannus for courage roar Stat focus: Melee Damage > Health > Stamina
Giganotosaurus (S-Tier)
The largest and most powerful land predator with a rage mechanic that makes it attack everything when enraged. Taming requires 50+ Shocking Tranq Darts and hours of unconscious feeding. A single Giga can destroy entire bases. The ultimate PvP creature.
Best with: Ascendant Giga Saddle, Cryopod for transport Stat focus: Melee Damage > Stamina > HP (avoid getting enraged)
Shadowmane (S-Tier)
A Genesis Part 2 creature that cloaks, stuns enemies, and has an excellent moveset including a teleporting pounce. Passive tame requiring you to sneak up and feed it while invisible. Bred Shadowmanes with high melee are top-tier PvP mounts.
Best with: No saddle needed (natural armor), Cryopod Stat focus: Melee > Health > Stamina
Managarmr (A-Tier)
An Extinction creature with a freeze breath and incredible mobility (dash + jet). Nerfed significantly from launch but still excellent for PvP harassment and kiting. The ice breath slows targets and eventually freezes them solid.
Best with: Ascendant Managarmr Saddle, Cryopod Stat focus: Stamina > Melee > Health
Desmodus (A-Tier)
A giant vampire bat from Fjordur that can grab players, drain blood for healing, and fly silently. The screech attack reveals hidden enemies through walls. Night-time combat bonuses make it a deadly nighttime raider. Passive tame with Blood Packs.
Best with: Desmodus Saddle, Blood Packs for taming, Night Owl trait Stat focus: Stamina > Health > Weight
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fabricated Sniper Rifle | PvP sniping, picking riders off tames | The longest-range conventional weapon, using Advanced Sniper Bullets. |
| Tek Rifle | Endgame PvP, boss farming | A tek-tier energy weapon that fires lasers with no bullet drop. |
| Compound Bow | Stealth PvP, precision taming | Uses Metal Arrows for high damage or Tranq Arrows for superior torpor application. |
| Pump-Action Shotgun | Cave runs, close-quarters PvP | Devastating at close range, essential for cave runs and indoor PvP. |
| Longneck Rifle | Taming, early-mid game ranged combat | The primary early-game sniper and taming weapon. |
Equipment Analysis
Fabricated Sniper Rifle: The longest-range conventional weapon, using Advanced Sniper Bullets. Deals massive damage per shot with a scope for precision. Essential for picking off riders from tames at range. Ammo is expensive — each bullet requires Metal Ingots and Gunpowder.
Tek Rifle: A tek-tier energy weapon that fires lasers with no bullet drop. Requires Element to fuel and a Tekgram from defeating bosses. Infinite ammo as long as you have Element. The best general-purpose weapon for endgame PvP.
Compound Bow: Uses Metal Arrows for high damage or Tranq Arrows for superior torpor application. The Compound Bow with metal arrows can shred Flak armor. Quiet operation makes it excellent for stealth. Also the best method for taming small creatures.
Pump-Action Shotgun: Devastating at close range, essential for cave runs and indoor PvP. Multiple pellets mean high damage even with imperfect aim. Ascendant quality Pump Shotguns are among the most valuable weapons on any server.
Longneck Rifle: The primary early-game sniper and taming weapon. Uses Simple Rifle Ammo for damage or Tranq Darts for taming. Every player needs a Longneck Rifle — it's the gateway to taming medium and large creatures. Shocking Tranq Darts make it even more effective.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in ARK: Survival Evolved centers on dinosaur taming and breeding and mutations. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.
What's strong right now:
- Rex with Fabricated Sniper Rifle is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- boss fights builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
- Shadowmane remains essential for learning hard content.
What's underrated:
- Giganotosaurus is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Compound Bow offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Desmodus builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
