This Palworld tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Detailed Builds Analysis
Dark Type (S-Tier)
Dark Pals like Shadowbeak and Astegon are among the strongest combat Pals with high attack stats and powerful Dark-element skills. Shadowbeak in particular is a top-tier flying mount that doubles as a devastating combat Pal. Dark types resist Dark attacks but are weak to Dragon.
Best with: Shadowbeak, Astegon, Dark element weapons, Pal Gear upgrades Stat focus: Attack > HP > Defense
Fire Type (A-Tier)
Fire Pals like Jormuntide Ignis and Blazamut are excellent combat Pals with AoE damage. Fire types also have Kindling work suitability, making them essential for smelting and cooking at base. Jormuntide Ignis is one of the strongest overall Pals in the game.
Best with: Jormuntide Ignis, Blazamut, Heat Resistant Armor Stat focus: Attack > Work Speed > HP
Water Type (A-Tier)
Water Pals like Jormuntide and Suzaku Aqua provide strong combat options and essential Watering work suitability for farms. Jormuntide is one of the best overall combat Pals and serves as a water mount. Water beats Fire but loses to Electric.
Best with: Jormuntide, Suzaku Aqua, Water-element weapons Stat focus: Attack > HP > Work Speed
Electric Type (A-Tier)
Electric Pals like Orserk and Grizzbolt are critical for Generating Electricity at base and strong in combat. Grizzbolt is an early legendary Pal obtainable from the Rayne Syndicate Tower boss. Electric types counter Water Pals effectively.
Best with: Orserk, Grizzbolt, Electric weapons, Generator setups Stat focus: Work Speed (for generators) > Attack > HP
Dragon Type (S-Tier)
Dragon Pals like Jetragon and Quivern are the rarest and most powerful Pals. Jetragon is the fastest flying mount and has devastating missile attacks. Dragon types counter Dark but are weak to Ice. Breeding is often the only reliable way to get good passive skills on Dragon Pals.
Best with: Jetragon, Quivern, Dragon-element weapons, Legendary Spheres for capture Stat focus: Attack > Speed > HP
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifle | General combat, weakening Pals for capture | The mid-tier automatic weapon with good damage and rate of fire. |
| Rocket Launcher | Tower bosses and legendary Pal encounters | The highest-damage weapon for taking on tower bosses and legendary Pals. |
| Crossbow | Early game exploration and stealthy Pal weakening | An early-game ranged option that's quiet and efficient. |
| Shotgun | Close-range combat against large Pals and raiders | Devastating close-range weapon that deals massive burst damage. |
| Sword | Stamina-efficient combat when paired with tanky Pals | The primary melee weapon, surprisingly viable with the right stats and Pal backup. |
Equipment Analysis
Assault Rifle: The mid-tier automatic weapon with good damage and rate of fire. Crafted at a High Quality Workbench with Refined Ingots and Polymer. Effective against most enemies and much safer than melee since you can weaken Pals for capture from range.
Rocket Launcher: The highest-damage weapon for taking on tower bosses and legendary Pals. Expensive ammo but one-shots most regular enemies and chunks boss health bars. Crafted late-game with Advanced materials.
Crossbow: An early-game ranged option that's quiet and efficient. Three types of bolts (regular, fire, poison) give tactical flexibility. Lower DPS than guns but available much earlier and ammo is cheaper to craft.
Shotgun: Devastating close-range weapon that deals massive burst damage. Best against large Pals where all pellets connect. Pump-action variant is available mid-game and the double-barrel comes later with higher burst.
Sword: The primary melee weapon, surprisingly viable with the right stats and Pal backup. Low stamina cost and decent damage make it useful for conserving ammo. The Metal Sword and above can stagger smaller Pals.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Palworld centers on Pal capture and base building automation. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one.
What's strong right now:
- Dark Type with Assault Rifle is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- breeding system builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
- Water Type remains essential for learning hard content.
What's underrated:
- Fire Type is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Crossbow offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Dragon Type builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
