DICE launched Battlefield 2042 on 19 November 2021 with no class system at all, and Update 3.2 in January 2023 put Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon back in charge of every Specialist. Season 7, Turning Point, went live on 19 March 2024 with the Haven map and closed out the seasonal run. What remains is a 128 player sandbox with 14 Specialists and more than 17 maps, still maintained through events and Vault Drops rather than numbered seasons.
Starting Battlefield 2042 can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
Battlefield 2042 is a fps game built around Four classes across 14 Specialists and 128 player Conquest. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Role
| Role | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Engineer | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Support | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Recon | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Battlefield Portal legacy kits | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with Engineer. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Battlefield Portal legacy kits as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Four classes across 14 Specialists
Since Update 3.2 every Specialist sits inside Assault, Engineer, Support or Recon, and the class decides the equipment. Assault always carries a Med Pen, Engineer a Repair Tool, Support a Defibrillator and Recon an Insertion Beacon, with a second gadget chosen from a class list.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Four classes across 14 Specialists works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Orbital
A rocket launch site in French Guiana with a live countdown that can end in a launch or an explosion depending on whether the objective is contested. Open ground between hard points favours vehicles heavily.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for PP-29: it's the most accessible early upgrade. High capacity submachine gun with a large drum and a very fast time to kill inside 30 metres. Falls apart at range, which is fine because Engineers rarely want that fight.
Step 4: Understand 128 player Conquest
Conquest on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles runs 64 versus 64 across enormous maps with vehicle spawns at every sector. Breakthrough was later cut to 64 players on several maps because 128 turned attack lanes into meat grinders.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to Kaleidoscope
A South Korean city map built around a data centre tower, reworked after launch to add cover and shorten the empty stretches between objectives. Vertical fighting dominates the centre.

Call In vehicle and supply drops
The Call In tablet requests a vehicle or supply crate to your position rather than waiting at a spawn screen. It changes rotation entirely, since a squad can pull an LATV4 Recon mid-field instead of walking back to base.
Plus system attachment swapping
Holding the attachment key opens a radial menu that swaps sights, barrels, ammo types and underbarrels mid-fight without leaving the loadout. Switching from a 3x optic to a red dot as an enemy closes is the intended use.
Battlefield Portal custom rules
Portal exposes a rules editor and content from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, so servers can mix eras, force specific weapons or rewrite scoring. Community servers are where much of the remaining population plays.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Assuming the game is still the specialist-only launch build from November 2021 and skipping the class equipment slot entirely
2. Running a full squad of Assault Specialists with no Repair Tool, then losing every objective to a single repaired tank
3. Sniping from the same rooftop shot after shot on a 128 player map, where the tracer is a beacon for four separate players
4. Walking across open ground on Orbital or Exposure instead of calling in a vehicle, and dying to armour three sectors from anywhere useful
5. Judging the game by 2021 reviews rather than the current build, which has seven seasons of maps, weapons and reworks layered on top
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Four classes across 14 Specialists and 128 player Conquest
- Choose Engineer as starting role
- Clear Orbital main content
- Acquire PP-29 or equivalent upgrade
- Reach Kaleidoscope
- Choose your Specialist by class role, not by gadget preference. Since Update 3.2 the class dictates your equipment slot, so a squad with four Assaults has no Repair Tool, no Defibrillator and no way to answer armour.
- Bind the Plus system attachment menu somewhere comfortable and actually use it mid-fight. Swapping from a 3x optic to a red dot as an enemy closes inside 20 metres is worth more than any weapon unlock.
Tips for New Players
- Choose your Specialist by class role, not by gadget preference. Since Update 3.2 the class dictates your equipment slot, so a squad with four Assaults has no Repair Tool, no Defibrillator and no way to answer armour.
- Bind the Plus system attachment menu somewhere comfortable and actually use it mid-fight. Swapping from a 3x optic to a red dot as an enemy closes inside 20 metres is worth more than any weapon unlock.
- Use the Call In tablet for transport instead of running. Requesting an LATV4 Recon at the edge of a sector saves 40 seconds per rotation, and 128 player Conquest is won by whichever team arrives first.
- As Engineer, fire the Javelin from a spot with cover behind you rather than the best angle. The lock-on warning tells the driver exactly where you are, and the smoke trail tells everyone else.
- As Support, drop the Ammo Crate before the fight starts, not after your squad runs dry. Crates take time to deploy and become useful, and a crate placed under fire is usually a crate placed for the enemy.
- Spot with Casper's OV-P drone from behind cover, not from the objective. The drone is the point of the Specialist, and dying with it in the air throws away the only persistent intel your team has.
- On Breakthrough, check whether the map is running 64 or 128 players. DICE reduced several Breakthrough playlists to 64 because attack lanes became unplayable, and the correct pace differs sharply between the two.
- Play Portal servers when the main playlist feels stale. The rules editor supports mixed eras and custom loadouts, and community servers with tuned rules hold much of the remaining active population.
- Learn which maps were reworked. Kaleidoscope, Hourglass, Breakaway and others were rebuilt after launch with added cover, so old advice about endless empty ground no longer matches what you load into.
- Revive with the Defibrillator from behind a corner rather than in the open. A Support who dies performing a revive converts one down into two, and the objective usually flips on that trade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Battlefield 2042 have classes now?
Yes. Update 3.2 in January 2023, during Season 3 Escalation, sorted all Specialists into Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon, each with fixed class equipment and a choice of class gadget.
Is the game still being updated?
Season 7 Turning Point on 19 March 2024 was the final numbered season. The game still receives events, challenges and Vault Drops plus maintenance, but the seasonal content calendar has ended.
Is it worth buying now that Battlefield 6 is out?
Battlefield 6 launched on 10 October 2025 and holds most of the franchise population. Battlefield 2042 is worth picking up on deep discount for its 128 player Conquest and Portal servers, not at full price.
How many maps and Specialists are there?
The store lists more than 17 maps and 14 Specialists across seven seasons, plus every Portal map drawn from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3.
Which class is best for a new player?
Assault. The Med Pen means you heal yourself between fights without needing a medic, and the class is built to take objectives, which is where the score comes from in Conquest and Breakthrough.
