Battlefield 4 shipped from DICE on 29 October 2013 on Frostbite 3, launched in a famously broken state, and then spent two years being repaired through a public Community Test Environment until it became the reference point the series keeps getting measured against. It reached Steam years later when EA returned its catalogue to the store in 2020, under appid 1238860. The pitch is 64 player Conquest on PC, four infantry classes, Levolution events that permanently change a map mid round, and Commander Mode running above it all. It is still online in 2026, with Steam concurrents typically running between about 1,000 and 1,600 and a larger population on the EA App that Steam charts never see. Populated servers are concentrated in a smaller set of maps and modes than the map list suggests.
Battlefield 4 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Siege of Shanghai | All ranks, 64 player Conquest on PC | The tower collapse Levolution, rooftop helicopter access, the busiest servers in the game | Engineer |
| 2 | Golmud Railway | All ranks, best on 64 player Conquest Large | Tank and jeep heavy play, the armoured train, long range Recon practice | Engineer |
| 3 | Operation Locker | All ranks, infantry only in practice | Fast weapon unlock progression, Support and Assault at their strongest | Assault |
| 4 | Zavod 311 | All ranks, strong at 32 to 64 players | The tower collapse Levolution, balanced infantry and vehicle fighting | Assault |
| 5 | Paracel Storm | All ranks, best on large player counts | The destroyer Levolution, boat and air vehicle play, wide open Recon sightlines | Assault |
Siege of Shanghai: Starting Area
The map from every trailer and still the most played. Three flags sit around a central skyscraper that collapses once its support pillars go, converting a vertical fight into a rubble field for the rest of the round.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | All ranks, 64 player Conquest on PC |
| Key Rewards | The tower collapse Levolution, rooftop helicopter access, the busiest servers in the game |
| Recommended Role | Engineer |
| Key Weapons | ACE 23 |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Levolution events. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first weapons upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Golmud Railway.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Golmud Railway: Early Game
The largest base game map, built around a rail line with heavy armour on both sides. Engineers and long sightlines dominate, and infantry without transport spend most of the round walking.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | All ranks, best on 64 player Conquest Large |
| Key Rewards | Tank and jeep heavy play, the armoured train, long range Recon practice |
| Recommended Role | Engineer |
| Key Weapons | ACE 23 |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Field Upgrades. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for ACE 23 if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Operation Locker.
Operation Locker: Mid Game
The infantry meat grinder, a prison interior with almost no vehicles and constant close quarters fire. It has no large Levolution set piece and does not need one, and it is the map most likely to still be full at odd hours.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | All ranks, infantry only in practice |
| Key Rewards | Fast weapon unlock progression, Support and Assault at their strongest |
| Recommended Role | Assault |
| Key Weapons | ACE 23 |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- AEK-971 becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Commander Mode for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Zavod 311: Late Game
An abandoned Soviet factory with a central tower that can be dropped across the middle of the map. Mixed vehicle and infantry play, with enough cover that a bipod Support can hold a wing alone.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | All ranks, strong at 32 to 64 players |
| Key Rewards | The tower collapse Levolution, balanced infantry and vehicle fighting |
| Recommended Role | Assault |
| Key Weapons | AEK-971 |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- AEK-971 should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Vehicle countermeasures mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Paracel Storm.
Paracel Storm: Endgame
The naval map, where a building storm eventually drives a destroyer into the island and reshapes the flag layout. Attack boats and helicopters matter more here than anywhere else in the base game.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | All ranks, best on large player counts |
| Key Rewards | The destroyer Levolution, boat and air vehicle play, wide open Recon sightlines |
| Recommended Role | Assault |
| Key Weapons | AEK-971 |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Vehicle crew for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Siege of Shanghai → Golmud Railway → Operation Locker → Zavod 311 → Paracel Storm. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
