Battlefield 4 shipped from DICE on 29 October 2013 on Frostbite 3, launched in a famously broken state, and then spent two years being repaired through a public Community Test Environment until it became the reference point the series keeps getting measured against. It reached Steam years later when EA returned its catalogue to the store in 2020, under appid 1238860. The pitch is 64 player Conquest on PC, four infantry classes, Levolution events that permanently change a map mid round, and Commander Mode running above it all. It is still online in 2026, with Steam concurrents typically running between about 1,000 and 1,600 and a larger population on the EA App that Steam charts never see. Populated servers are concentrated in a smaller set of maps and modes than the map list suggests.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Siege of Shanghai)

The map from every trailer and still the most played. Three flags sit around a central skyscraper that collapses once its support pillars go, converting a vertical fight into a rubble field for the rest of the round.

Level/Difficulty: All ranks, 64 player Conquest on PC Key Rewards: The tower collapse Levolution, rooftop helicopter access, the busiest servers in the game

What to Do in Siege of Shanghai

  1. Learn Levolution events. Every map has one large scripted change plus dozens of small ones. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Engineer as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Spotting is worth more than most kills. A marked enemy is visible to your entire team, and the assist score for a spotted kill feeds your Field Upgrade chain.
  4. Acquire your first weapons upgrade: ACE 23 or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Levolution events fundamentals
  • Engineer selected and functional
  • Siege of Shanghai main content cleared
  • Ready for Golmud Railway

Phase 2: Early Game (Golmud Railway)

The largest base game map, built around a rail line with heavy armour on both sides. Engineers and long sightlines dominate, and infantry without transport spend most of the round walking.

Level/Difficulty: All ranks, best on 64 player Conquest Large Key Rewards: Tank and jeep heavy play, the armoured train, long range Recon practice

What to Do in Golmud Railway

  1. Work on Field Upgrades. Perks come in squad shared chains rather than individually chosen slots. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for ACE 23 if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. The defibrillator matters more than the medic bag on a contested flag, because a revive is a ticket saved rather than health restored.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Operation Locker.
  5. Consider whether Assault might suit your playstyle better than Engineer.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Field Upgrades integrated into gameplay
  • ACE 23 acquired
  • Golmud Railway fully cleared
  • Ready for Operation Locker

Phase 3: Mid Game (Operation Locker)

The infantry meat grinder, a prison interior with almost no vehicles and constant close quarters fire. It has no large Levolution set piece and does not need one, and it is the map most likely to still be full at odd hours.

Level/Difficulty: All ranks, infantry only in practice Key Rewards: Fast weapon unlock progression, Support and Assault at their strongest

What to Do in Operation Locker

  1. Master Commander Mode. One player per team runs a top down view with UAV scans, supply drops, gunship support and a cruise missile on a long cooldown. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward AEK-971. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Field Upgrades are squad shared and reset on a squad wipe, so playing near your squad is a mechanical power increase rather than a courtesy.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Spotting and squad spawns for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Commander Mode mastered
  • AEK-971 acquired or in progress
  • Operation Locker fully cleared
  • Ready for Zavod 311

Phase 4: Late Game (Zavod 311)

An abandoned Soviet factory with a central tower that can be dropped across the middle of the map. Mixed vehicle and infantry play, with enough cover that a bipod Support can hold a wing alone.

Level/Difficulty: All ranks, strong at 32 to 64 players Key Rewards: The tower collapse Levolution, balanced infantry and vehicle fighting

What to Do in Zavod 311

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Assault or Engineer with optimized gear.
  2. AEK-971 should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Match your vehicle countermeasure to the threat. Flares beat lock on launchers, ECM jammer beats laser guidance, and the wrong choice on an Engineer heavy map gets you killed on the first lock.
  4. Vehicle countermeasures optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Paracel Storm.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • AEK-971 upgraded to max
  • Zavod 311 fully cleared
  • Ready for Paracel Storm

Phase 5: Endgame (Paracel Storm)

The naval map, where a building storm eventually drives a destroyer into the island and reshapes the flag layout. Attack boats and helicopters matter more here than anywhere else in the base game.

Level/Difficulty: All ranks, best on large player counts Key Rewards: The destroyer Levolution, boat and air vehicle play, wide open Recon sightlines

What to Do in Paracel Storm

  1. Paracel Storm tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. The Levolution events change objectives permanently. On Siege of Shanghai, dropping the tower early denies the enemy the roof but also removes your own vertical cover, so trigger it when your team is losing the height fight rather than winning it.
  3. The endgame loop: run Paracel Storm, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Vehicle crew for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Vehicle countermeasures mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Paracel Storm fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Playing Assault without ever pulling the defibrillator, which throws away the single most valuable thing the class does.
  • Engineers firing lock on launchers alone against a vehicle with flares, giving away position for zero damage instead of pairing with a second Engineer.
  • Sprinting away from your squad and losing Field Upgrade progress every time the squad wipes without you.
  • Triggering a Levolution event because it looks impressive, without checking whether your own team is the one holding the high ground it destroys.
  • Assuming the game is dead because Steam shows about a thousand players. Conquest and Operation Locker servers still fill, and the EA App population sits outside that number.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Spotting is worth more than most kills. A marked enemy is visible to your entire team, and the assist score for a spotted kill feeds your Field Upgrade chain.
  2. The defibrillator matters more than the medic bag on a contested flag, because a revive is a ticket saved rather than health restored.
  3. Field Upgrades are squad shared and reset on a squad wipe, so playing near your squad is a mechanical power increase rather than a courtesy.
  4. Match your vehicle countermeasure to the threat. Flares beat lock on launchers, ECM jammer beats laser guidance, and the wrong choice on an Engineer heavy map gets you killed on the first lock.
  5. The Levolution events change objectives permanently. On Siege of Shanghai, dropping the tower early denies the enemy the roof but also removes your own vertical cover, so trigger it when your team is losing the height fight rather than winning it.
