Biomutant is an open-world action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world populated by mutated animals. You play as a customizable creature with both martial arts (Wung-Fu) melee combat and ranged firearms, enhanced by bio-mutations and psionic powers. The weapon crafting system lets you build absurd custom weapons from scavenged parts, and the tribal warfare system has you choosing sides in a conflict over the fate of the Tree of Life. Five distinct biome hazard zones require specialized gear to explore, each containing unique loot and story content.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Tree of Life
The central landmark and narrative focus. Four roots extend into different biomes, each being attacked by a World-Eater boss. The health of the Tree is tied to the main questline. Reaching each root involves traversing hazard zones.
Level/Difficulty: All Game Key Rewards: Main quest progression, World-Eater boss fights, central fast travel
What to Do in Tree of Life
- Learn mutation system. Bio-mutations and psi-powers grant special abilities: Mucus Bubble (bouncing shield), Fungi (spawns mushroom bounce pad), Moth Mouth (swarm attack), and more. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Saboteur (Melee/Speed) as your starting role. It's the most forgiving option.
- Weapon crafting is king — a rifle crafted from top-tier scavenged parts deals 2-3x more damage than any dropped weapon. Always build at workbenches.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade — Klonkfist (Melee) or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand mutation system fundamentals
- Saboteur (Melee/Speed) selected and functional
- Tree of Life main content cleared
- Ready for Surfipelago
Phase 2: Early Game — Surfipelago
A coastal archipelago of small islands connected by water. Requires the Googlide (jet-ski mount) to navigate. Contains unique aquatic enemies, underwater exploration opportunities, and island-hopping resource runs.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-Game Key Rewards: Water-exclusive resources, Googlide unlock, island exploration, unique mutations
What to Do in Surfipelago
- Work on weapon crafting. Scavenged parts combine into custom weapons at any workbench. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Klonkfist (Melee) if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Bio-mutations recharge on 15-30 second cooldowns with no resource cost. Spam them in every fight — there's zero reason to save them.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Deadzone.
- Consider whether Dead-Eye (Ranged) might suit your playstyle better than Saboteur (Melee/Speed).
Phase 2 Checklist
- weapon crafting integrated into gameplay
- Klonkfist (Melee) acquired
- Surfipelago fully cleared
- Ready for Deadzone
Phase 3: Mid Game — Deadzone
Radiation-contaminated wasteland requiring 100% radiation resistance to explore safely. Contains the highest-quality weapon parts and rare bio-mutations. The Hyla World-Eater boss resides here.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-Late Game Key Rewards: Rare weapon parts, unique bio-mutations, Hyla boss fight, radiation-exclusive resources
What to Do in Deadzone
- Master tribe warfare. Six tribes control different territories, each with a unique philosophy about the Tree of Life. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Crafted Automatic Rifle. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Tribe Wung-Fu moves unlock per tribe conquered. You get 5 unique moves by conquering all tribes (ally or defeat). Complete tribe quests for the full moveset.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Wung-Fu combat for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- tribe warfare mastered
- Crafted Automatic Rifle acquired or in progress
- Deadzone fully cleared
- Ready for Kluppy Dunes
Phase 4: Late Game — Kluppy Dunes
Desert biome with heat hazards and burrowing enemies. The Mekton (mech suit) is found here, providing heavy combat capability. Sandy terrain slows movement but mount vehicles compensate.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-Game Key Rewards: Mekton unlock, heat-exclusive resources, desert tribe encounters, unique enemies
What to Do in Kluppy Dunes
- Finalize your build. You should be running Dead-Eye (Ranged) or Saboteur (Melee/Speed) with optimized gear.
- Crafted Automatic Rifle should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Resistance suits stack percentage from multiple gear pieces. Mix armor pieces to reach 100% resistance for any hazard zone before entering.
- biome hazard zones optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Knack Hill.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Crafted Automatic Rifle upgraded to max
- Kluppy Dunes fully cleared
- Ready for Knack Hill
Phase 5: Endgame — Knack Hill
Forested highlands with abundant crafting materials and the densest enemy population. No hazard requirements make it freely explorable. The best early-to-mid game location for leveling and part farming.
Level/Difficulty: Early-Mid Game Key Rewards: Abundant crafting parts, dense enemy encounters for XP, tribe outposts, mutation pools
What to Do in Knack Hill
- Knack Hill tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- The Automaton (robot companion) deals consistent ranged damage without your input. Upgrade it whenever possible — it's a permanent DPS increase.
- The endgame loop: run Knack Hill, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Sentinel (Tank) for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where biome hazard zones mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Knack Hill fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Relying on dropped weapons instead of crafting — the crafting system is the primary gear progression and dropped loot falls behind quickly.
- Ignoring mutation abilities because they seem weak early — mutations scale with Intellect and become devastating at higher levels.
- Entering hazard zones without adequate resistance and dying to environmental damage before reaching anything useful.
- Spreading stat points evenly instead of focusing on 2-3 key stats. A focused build (e.g., max Intellect for Psi-Freak) dramatically outperforms a generalist.
- Rushing the main quest and missing the massive open world — side content, mutations, and crafting parts are all found through exploration.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Weapon crafting is king — a rifle crafted from top-tier scavenged parts deals 2-3x more damage than any dropped weapon. Always build at workbenches.
- Bio-mutations recharge on 15-30 second cooldowns with no resource cost. Spam them in every fight — there's zero reason to save them.
- Tribe Wung-Fu moves unlock per tribe conquered. You get 5 unique moves by conquering all tribes (ally or defeat). Complete tribe quests for the full moveset.
- Resistance suits stack percentage from multiple gear pieces. Mix armor pieces to reach 100% resistance for any hazard zone before entering.
- The Automaton (robot companion) deals consistent ranged damage without your input. Upgrade it whenever possible — it's a permanent DPS increase.
