Black Desert Online Walkthrough: Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Black Desert Online walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Researched and editorially reviewed. Updated .

Black Desert Online pairs twitch action combat with one of the deepest crafting and trade economies in any MMO. Pearl Abyss launched it in 2015, and the western servers still pull large grind crowds at endgame spots like Gyfin Rhasia and Sycraia.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Velia starting town)

Velia starting town is the starting area where you learn fundamentals.

Level/Difficulty: Beginner Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades

What to Do in Velia starting town

  1. Learn Action combat with combos. Skills chain through directional inputs rather than a tab target rotation, so positioning and animation cancels decide your damage and survival. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Ranger kiter as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Pick one main and funnel boss scrolls, Cron stones and silver into it rather than spreading gear across alts.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Offin Tett mainhand or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Action combat with combos fundamentals
  • Ranger kiter selected and functional
  • Velia starting town main content cleared
  • Ready for Calpheon City

Phase 2: Early Game (Calpheon City)

The largest western hub with high contribution worker nodes and crafting houses.

Level/Difficulty: 30 to 50 Key Rewards: Worker empire expansion, crafting lodgings, trade routes

What to Do in Calpheon City

  1. Work on Node and worker empire. Investing contribution points into nodes lets workers harvest resources around the clock, feeding both your crafting and your silver income. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Offin Tett mainhand if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Build failstacks on cheap reblath gear and only commit them when you reach a sensible target for the tap you want.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Valencia desert.
  5. Consider whether Warrior bruiser might suit your playstyle better than Ranger kiter.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Node and worker empire integrated into gameplay
  • Offin Tett mainhand acquired
  • Calpheon City fully cleared
  • Ready for Valencia desert

Phase 3: Mid Game (Valencia desert)

Valencia desert is the mid-game skill check.

Level/Difficulty: Intermediate Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades

What to Do in Valencia desert

  1. Master Life skills economy. Cooking, alchemy, fishing, trading and processing each level independently and sell into a player driven central market. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Kzarka mainhand. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Keep your contribution points invested in connected node chains so workers reach the resources you actually process.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Knowledge journal system for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Life skills economy mastered
  • Kzarka mainhand acquired or in progress
  • Valencia desert fully cleared
  • Ready for Drieghan highlands

Phase 4: Late Game (Drieghan highlands)

Drieghan highlands is the late-game area with advanced content.

Level/Difficulty: Advanced Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades

What to Do in Drieghan highlands

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Warrior bruiser or Ranger kiter with optimized gear.
  2. Kzarka mainhand should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Cook cheap beer in bulk early so your workers never sit idle while you grind or sleep.
  4. Enhancement and gear upgrading optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into O'dyllita forest.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Kzarka mainhand upgraded to max
  • Drieghan highlands fully cleared
  • Ready for O'dyllita forest

Phase 5: Endgame (O'dyllita forest)

O'dyllita forest is the endgame zone with the hardest challenges.

Level/Difficulty: Expert Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades

What to Do in O'dyllita forest

  1. O'dyllita forest tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Run a fixed skill rotation at each grind spot to clear packs in the fewest motions and reduce downtime.
  3. The endgame loop: run O'dyllita forest, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Guardian heavy frontline for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Enhancement and gear upgrading mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • O'dyllita forest fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Tapping past PRI without Cron protection and losing months of progress to a single failure.
  • Spreading silver across too many alts so no character reaches a real gear breakpoint.
  • Ignoring the worker empire and missing the passive income that funds enhancement.
  • Grinding spots far above your gear and bleeding silver on repairs and slow clears.
  • Selling crystals and accessories to vendors instead of listing them on the central market.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Pick one main and funnel boss scrolls, Cron stones and silver into it rather than spreading gear across alts.
  2. Build failstacks on cheap reblath gear and only commit them when you reach a sensible target for the tap you want.
  3. Keep your contribution points invested in connected node chains so workers reach the resources you actually process.
  4. Cook cheap beer in bulk early so your workers never sit idle while you grind or sleep.
  5. Run a fixed skill rotation at each grind spot to clear packs in the fewest motions and reduce downtime.
