KLab's free-to-play gacha action game reached Steam on 17 August 2020, five years after the 2015 Japanese mobile launch, and it shares one account across PC and phone. You fight with a team of three in real-time 3D hack-and-slash quests, and everything above that is collection management: Soul Trees, Ascension, link slots, accessories and Transcendence. KLab reported 80 million downloads by August 2023 and has kept adding characters continuously since, which is why any character tier list you read has a short shelf life. Plan around the systems, which are stable, rather than around whichever character is strongest this month.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best characters, weapons worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Five attribute wheel

The five attributes are Power in red, Technique in green, Speed in blue, Heart in purple and Mind in orange. Power beats Technique, Technique beats Speed and Speed beats Power in a three-way cycle. Heart and Mind sit outside that cycle: each is both strong and weak against the other, so pairing them is a mutual damage boost and a mutual risk. Attacking into an advantage raises your damage and cuts what you take, and attacking into a disadvantage does the reverse.

Soul Tree and Ascension

Every character has a personal Soul Tree filled in with reinforcement stones, and a fully built one runs to 150 percent. Ascension is separate: you feed other characters in as material, and rarer material grants more experience and more Transcendence Points. A character that is level 200 with a 150 percent Soul Tree is what the game means by finished, and getting there is the bulk of the grind for any unit you actually intend to use.

Characters at 3 stars and above have link slots, but only one is open at first. More open as you level the Slot Souls on the Soul Tree. Whatever character you drop into a link slot passes its Soul Trait to the base character, so a weak unit with a strong trait is worth keeping. Damage-taken reduction and preferential normal or strong attack damage traits are the ones veterans hoard, and duplicates of a common character with a good trait are often more useful than a shiny new one.

Transcendence stat slots

The Extra Stat Boost Slot opens once a character's Special Move reaches level 5. Transcendence Points then buy rolls on the Extra Stat Boost Lottery, and a duplicate of the exact same character unlocks the Super Extra Stat Boost Lottery. Each Basic Stat Boost Slot can be set to one of the five base stats: Stamina, Attack, Defense, Focus and Spiritual Pressure. This is the last layer of progression and it is where duplicates stop being wasted pulls.

Killer abilities and Affiliations

Most characters carry an Affiliation matching a group from the manga, and characters with a matching Killer ability deal extra damage to enemies of that Affiliation. Soul Reaper Killer hits Soul Reaper enemies harder, and the same pattern runs through the other groups. Quest enemy composition is fixed, so checking Affiliation before you commit a team is the cheapest damage increase in the game and costs nothing but a menu check.

Weapons Guide

WeaponWhy It MattersBest For
Normal attack chainsThe free, cooldown-free damage that carries most clears.Timed modes like Guild Quests, general questing, sustained boss damage
Strong AttackHigher damage per input than a normal chain but gated behind a cooldown.Boss damage windows and burst checks where a short opening decides the run
Special MoveEach character's signature attack, fully voiced by the original Japanese anime cast.Boss openings, and as the gate you must clear to start Transcendence
AccessoriesEquippable items that add stats on top of level, Soul Tree and links.Topping up whichever stat a specific quest punishes you for lacking
Killer abilitiesBonus damage against enemies of a matching Affiliation, such as Soul Reaper Killer against Soul Reaper enemies.Epic Raids and any fixed-composition quest where you know the enemy list in advance

Normal attack chains: The free, cooldown-free damage that carries most clears. Normal Attack Damage, shortened to NAD by the community, is boosted by preferential NAD Soul Traits sitting in link slots and by attack accessories.

Strong Attack: Higher damage per input than a normal chain but gated behind a cooldown. Reduced strong attack cooldown Soul Traits and preferential Strong Attack Damage traits are what turn this from a filler input into a build.

Special Move: Each character's signature attack, fully voiced by the original Japanese anime cast. Its level matters for more than damage: taking a Special Move to level 5 is what opens the Extra Stat Boost Slot for Transcendence.

Accessories: Equippable items that add stats on top of level, Soul Tree and links. They are the fastest layer to change between quests because swapping an accessory takes seconds and costs nothing, unlike ascending or feeding reinforcement stones.

Killer abilities: Bonus damage against enemies of a matching Affiliation, such as Soul Reaper Killer against Soul Reaper enemies. Quest enemy Affiliations are fixed and visible before you start, so this is a check you can always make.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
Story QuestsFrom your first character up to a level 200 unit for the late arcsSpirit Orbs, character material, reinforcement stones, story unlocks
Co-Op QuestsMid progression, one or two finished charactersCo-op materials, ascension fodder, event currency
Guild QuestsRequires a guild and at least one fully built attackerGuild rewards, ranking rewards, guild-wide bonuses
Epic RaidsLate progression, a counter-picked and fully levelled teamEpic Raid medals, familiars, exchange characters
Senkaimon QuestsNeeds breadth, several partly built units across all five attributesSenkaimon Medals, summon tickets, exchange characters

Story Quests: A run through the Bleach story from Rukia and Ichigo's first meeting onward, with later arcs including Thousand-Year Blood War added over time. It is the main source of early resources and the least punishing place to learn how attributes and dodging work.

Co-Op Quests: Team up with up to three other players in real time. Because the party covers multiple attributes, you can bring a specialist rather than a generalist and let someone else cover the enemies you are weak into.

Guild Quests: A timed boss rush run through your guild, with the rules changing week to week. Score depends on how you play as much as on raw power, with bonus criteria such as building combos and finishing without taking damage.

Epic Raids: Up to six players against a single very large boss across several difficulty tiers. Bosses are fixed in attribute and Affiliation, and clearing them earns familiars that help on later raid attempts as well as medals to spend in the raid exchange.

Senkaimon Quests: The tower mode. Each floor puts a rule or restriction on which characters may enter, so a roster of one maximum investment team will stall. Clearing floors earns Senkaimon Medals, which buy characters and summon tickets.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Read the attribute cycle once and keep it in your head: Power beats Technique, Technique beats Speed, Speed beats Power. Heart and Mind are the outlier pair, each strong and weak against the other, so a Heart team against a Mind stage cuts both ways.
  2. Check the enemy Affiliation on the quest screen before you build the team. A matching Killer ability is a straight damage increase that costs you nothing but a menu check.
  3. Do not feed away 3 and 4 star characters with strong Soul Traits. Damage-taken reduction and preferential attack damage traits are what fill your link slots, and a common unit with a good trait outvalues a rare one with a poor trait.
  4. Push one attacker to level 200 with a 150 percent Soul Tree before starting a second. Half-built characters clear nothing, and the reinforcement stone cost is the same whether you spend it on one unit or five.
  5. Level a character's Special Move to 5 as soon as you can afford it. That is the gate for the Extra Stat Boost Slot, which is where duplicate pulls stop being wasted.
  6. Save duplicates of characters you actually use. A duplicate of the exact same character unlocks the Super Extra Stat Boost Lottery, which is a better roll than the standard Transcendence lottery.
  7. Keep at least one usable unit per attribute. Senkaimon floors restrict who you can bring, and a roster built entirely around one colour hits a hard wall partway up.
  8. Swap accessories between quests. They are the only progression layer you can change instantly and for free, so treat them as per-quest tuning rather than a permanent loadout.
  9. Play on PC and phone with the same account. Cross-platform play means you can grind quests on a monitor and still do dailies on a commute without splitting your roster.
  10. Distrust old tier lists. KLab has been shipping new characters continuously since 2015, and a list written even a few months ago will be ranking units that have since been outclassed or reworked around.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spreading resources across a dozen half-built characters. Reinforcement stones and ascension material are finite, and a roster of level 100 units with 60 percent Soul Trees clears less than one finished unit.
  • Ignoring link slots because the interface buries them. A base character with two strong Soul Traits linked in can outperform a rarer character with empty slots, and slot souls on the Soul Tree are what open the extra slots.
  • Chasing every banner. Spirit Orbs run out fast, and spending them on a character you will never build to level 200 leaves you without orbs for the one you actually want.
  • Assuming Heart and Mind work like the other three. They do not sit in the Power, Technique, Speed cycle at all: they are strong and weak against each other simultaneously, so bringing Heart into a Mind stage boosts your damage and the enemy's at the same time.
  • Treating this as a game you finish. It is a live-service title that has been running since 2015 with continuous character additions, so building around a permanent best team is the wrong frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Brave Souls on Steam the same game as the mobile version?

Yes. The Steam release arrived on 17 August 2020 and uses the same account and the same servers as iOS and Android, so you can play on PC and phone interchangeably and your roster follows you. Cross-platform multiplayer works too, which matters for Co-Op Quests and Epic Raids where you need other players to fill the party.

Which characters should I aim for?

No honest guide can answer that with a fixed list. KLab has released new characters continuously since 2015, and the strongest units rotate as new banners and reworks land. What does not change is the systems: attribute counters, matching Killer abilities to enemy Affiliation, and finishing a character to level 200 with a 150 percent Soul Tree. Build around those and check a community list dated within the last few weeks for current specifics.

Characters at 3 stars and above have link slots, and whichever character you place in a slot passes its Soul Trait to the base character. Only one slot is open at first; the rest unlock by levelling the Slot Souls on the Soul Tree. This is why low rarity characters with good traits are worth keeping rather than feeding away as ascension material.

When does Transcendence unlock?

The Extra Stat Boost Slot opens once a character's Special Move hits level 5. From there Transcendence Points buy rolls on the Extra Stat Boost Lottery, and a duplicate of the same character unlocks the better Super Extra Stat Boost Lottery. Each Basic Stat Boost Slot can be set to Stamina, Attack, Defense, Focus or Spiritual Pressure.

Do I have to spend money to progress?

No, but it is a gacha and the pacing reflects that. Spirit Orbs come from Story Quests, events, daily logins and mode rewards, and free players accumulate them slowly enough that discipline about which banners to pull on matters more than pull count. The systems that decide clear speed, meaning Soul Tree completion, link slot traits and attribute matching, are all earned through play rather than purchase.
