CarX Technologies built this drift physics model with the CarX Motorsport racing team and put it on Steam on 17 November 2017. Over 120 cars, 19 built-in tracks and five categories of modification with more than 50 adjustable settings sit behind a tandem scoring system called XDS that grades runs out of 100 points. Nine years on it still holds a 95 percent positive rating across more than 40,000 English reviews.
Combat in CarX Drift Racing Online rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. XDS tandem scoring out of 100
Tandem runs are judged on a 100 point scale, once with you leading and once chasing. The lead run rewards angle and line, the chase run rewards proximity, so a car set up purely for maximum angle often scores badly as the follower.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Five modification categories
Parts are split into five modification types covering engine, drivetrain, suspension, wheels and body, feeding into more than 50 individual settings. Swapping an engine changes power delivery enough that a tune built for the stock unit stops working entirely.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Suspension and steering geometry
Camber, caster, Ackermann, steering angle, anti-roll bars, spring rates and differential lock are all exposed. Steering angle usually maxes out between 56 and 60 degrees depending on the car, and differential lock commonly sits between 0.35 and 0.70.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. TOP-32 elimination brackets
TOP-32 runs a knockout bracket of tandem battles across dozens of track configurations, with a judge's decision screen at the end of each round. It is the closest the game gets to a real competition format.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Steam Workshop maps and liveries
Beyond the 19 built-in tracks, the Workshop carries hundreds of community maps and a livery editor deep enough that most online lobbies run custom designs. Downloading a map takes effect without leaving the game.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
XDS tandem scoring out of 100 + Five modification categories
Tandem runs are judged on a 100 point scale, once with you leading and once chasing. When combined with Five modification categories, parts are split into five modification types covering engine, drivetrain, suspension, wheels and body, feeding into more than 50 individual settings. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Suspension and steering geometry + TOP-32 elimination brackets
Camber, caster, Ackermann, steering angle, anti-roll bars, spring rates and differential lock are all exposed. Paired with TOP-32 elimination brackets, top-32 runs a knockout bracket of tandem battles across dozens of track configurations, with a judge's decision screen at the end of each round. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Steam Workshop maps and liveries as a Multiplier
Beyond the 19 built-in tracks, the Workshop carries hundreds of community maps and a livery editor deep enough that most online lobbies run custom designs. Downloading a map takes effect without leaving the game. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Steam Workshop maps and liveries optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit XDS tandem scoring out of 100 for maximum damage windows
- Chain Five modification categories and Suspension and steering geometry for combo damage
- Use TOP-32 elimination brackets to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Start every tune with steering angle at the car's maximum, usually 56 to 60 degrees, and Ackermann at 0 percent. That combination is stable, and you can add Ackermann later once you know how the car behaves without it.
- Position using XDS tandem scoring out of 100 to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Five modification categories: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Springstone but will get you killed in Navaro Base A.
