This is the original Counter-Strike, the Half-Life mod Minh Le and Jess Cliffe put out in beta in June 1999, which Valve shipped at retail in November 2000 and finished as version 1.6 in 2003. Two teams of five buy weapons with money earned last round, and one death means sitting out until the round ends. The AK-47 costs 2500 dollars, the M4A1 costs 3100 and the AWP costs 4750, and every one of those numbers still shapes how a match is played.
Starting Counter-Strike can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
Counter-Strike is a fps game built around Round based buy economy and One life per round. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Role
| Role | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Entry fragger | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| AWPer | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Lurker | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Support | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| In-game leader | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with AWPer. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid In-game leader as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Round based buy economy
You start with 800 dollars, a round win pays 3250, a standard kill pays 300, and a losing team gets 1400 rising by 500 per consecutive loss up to 3400. Terrorists who plant the bomb collect 800 even in a lost round, which is why planting is worth doing on a round you have already conceded.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Round based buy economy works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to de_dust2
The most played map ever made, built around three lanes: long A, mid doors and catwalk, and the B tunnels. Mid control decides most rounds because it feeds rotations to both bomb sites.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for M4A1: it's the most accessible early upgrade. The Counter-Terrorist rifle at 3100 dollars, more accurate and easier to control than the AK but less lethal per bullet. The silencer hides tracers and muzzle flash and quiets the report.
Step 4: Understand One life per round
There is no respawn. A dead player watches the rest of the round, so trading a teammate's death for a kill matters more than personal survival statistics, and a 5v4 advantage is close to decisive at this level of lethality.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to de_inferno
Tight apartment blocks and the banana corridor to B. Utility matters more here than aim, since most approaches funnel through doorways a single grenade can hold.
Essential Mechanics Explained
Round based buy economy
You start with 800 dollars, a round win pays 3250, a standard kill pays 300, and a losing team gets 1400 rising by 500 per consecutive loss up to 3400. Terrorists who plant the bomb collect 800 even in a lost round, which is why planting is worth doing on a round you have already conceded.
One life per round
There is no respawn. A dead player watches the rest of the round, so trading a teammate's death for a kill matters more than personal survival statistics, and a 5v4 advantage is close to decisive at this level of lethality.
Bomb defusal and hostage rescue
On de_ maps the Terrorists plant the C4 at site A or B, taking three seconds, and Counter-Terrorists defuse in ten seconds or five with a 200 dollar defuse kit. On cs_ maps such as cs_office the Counter-Terrorists must instead reach and escort hostages back to a rescue zone.
Movement accuracy penalty
Bullets go where the crosshair points only when you are standing still. Running and gunning spreads shots wildly, so the standard rifle exchange is stop, shoot, move, and stopping cleanly is the mechanical skill that separates players.
Spray pattern control
Each automatic weapon climbs and drifts in a fixed pattern. The first three or four bullets from an AK-47 are accurate enough for a headshot at range, after which you either pull down against the pattern or stop firing and let the weapon reset.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Firing while running, which spreads bullets far enough that a full magazine can miss a stationary target at 20 metres
2. Buying a rifle on a round where the rest of the team is saving, giving the enemy a free 300 dollars and a dropped weapon
3. Skipping the 200 dollar defuse kit and losing a retake by the exact five seconds it would have saved
4. Holding an AWP angle from close range, where the movement penalty and slow rate of fire turn a strong rifle into a liability
5. Failing to plant the bomb on a lost round and starting the next round 800 dollars poorer per player than you needed to be
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Round based buy economy and One life per round
- Choose AWPer as starting role
- Clear de_dust2 main content
- Acquire M4A1 or equivalent upgrade
- Reach de_inferno
- Stop completely before firing. Counter-Strike applies a heavy accuracy penalty to moving shots, so the winning habit is counter strafing to a dead stop, firing two or three bullets, then moving again behind cover.
- Tap or burst the AK-47 past about 20 metres. The first bullets are accurate enough to headshot, and since the AK kills through a helmet with one head hit at any range, three careful shots beat thirty sprayed ones.
Tips for New Players
- Stop completely before firing. Counter-Strike applies a heavy accuracy penalty to moving shots, so the winning habit is counter strafing to a dead stop, firing two or three bullets, then moving again behind cover.
- Tap or burst the AK-47 past about 20 metres. The first bullets are accurate enough to headshot, and since the AK kills through a helmet with one head hit at any range, three careful shots beat thirty sprayed ones.
- Buy as a team or not at all. Four rifles and one pistol loses to five rifles, so if the poorest teammate cannot afford armour and a gun, the whole team saving one round is usually the stronger play.
- Plant the bomb even on rounds you have already lost. Each Terrorist collects 800 dollars for a successful plant, which often funds the next round's rifles regardless of the round result.
- Buy the 200 dollar defuse kit every single Counter-Terrorist round you can. It cuts defuse time from ten seconds to five, which converts retakes that were impossible into retakes that are merely difficult.
- Hold angles wide rather than hugging the corner. Standing back from a corner means an entering opponent has to cross more of your crosshair, and it stops you being flashed and killed by someone standing a metre away.
- Learn the loss bonus ladder: 1400 after one loss, then 1900, 2400, 2900 and 3400 from the fifth consecutive loss. Knowing what the other team can afford tells you whether to expect an eco rush or a full buy.
- Keep the AWP away from close angles. It slows your movement while equipped and cannot be re chambered quickly, so a missed shot inside 10 metres usually ends with a 4750 dollar rifle in enemy hands.
- Use sound. Footsteps carry clearly in GoldSrc, walking silences you, and holding an angle in silence while an opponent sprints toward it is the cheapest kill available in the game.
- On dust2, control mid before committing to a site. Mid doors and catwalk connect to both A and B, so a team that owns mid can rotate faster than the defenders can respond, which is the whole reason the map has lasted 25 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is appid 10 the same as CS:GO or CS2?
No. Appid 10 is the original Counter-Strike that grew out of the 1999 Half-Life mod and finished as version 1.6 in 2003. It runs on GoldSrc and plays nothing like the later Source and Source 2 titles.
How much money do you start a match with?
800 dollars, which buys a pistol and a little armour or a defuse kit. A round win pays 3250, a standard kill pays 300, and money is capped at 16000.
Why does everyone still play de_dust2?
Its three lane layout gives both teams readable options and makes mid control the deciding factor. The map has been in rotation since Counter-Strike 1.1 and remains the default for pickup games.
Is the AWP worth 4750 dollars?
On maps with long sightlines such as de_train and de_dust2, yes, because one hit anywhere above the legs kills. On close maps it is a poor purchase, since you cannot reposition quickly while holding it.
Are there still servers running?
Yes. Community servers for 1.6 have run continuously for over two decades, particularly in Eastern Europe and Latin America, and the Steam version still connects to them through the standard server browser.
