This is the original Counter-Strike, the Half-Life mod Minh Le and Jess Cliffe put out in beta in June 1999, which Valve shipped at retail in November 2000 and finished as version 1.6 in 2003. Two teams of five buy weapons with money earned last round, and one death means sitting out until the round ends. The AK-47 costs 2500 dollars, the M4A1 costs 3100 and the AWP costs 4750, and every one of those numbers still shapes how a match is played.

Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Build Progression Path

  1. Start with AWPer: the most forgiving option for learning the game
  2. Transition to Entry fragger once you understand core mechanics and have access to AK-47
  3. Keep a Lurker setup for content that keeps killing you
  4. Try In-game leader for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics

Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.

Gearing Tips

  • Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
  • Stop completely before firing. Counter-Strike applies a heavy accuracy penalty to moving shots, so the winning habit is counter strafing to a dead stop, firing two or three bullets, then moving again behind cover.
  • Tap or burst the AK-47 past about 20 metres. The first bullets are accurate enough to headshot, and since the AK kills through a helmet with one head hit at any range, three careful shots beat thirty sprayed ones.
  • Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
