Cuphead is Studio MDHR's hand inked run and gun built around 19 base game boss fights, six run and gun stages and three mausoleum challenges across three Inkwell Isles and Inkwell Hell. Every frame was drawn and painted by hand in a 1930s cartoon style, with a soundtrack recorded by a live jazz band. You get three hit points, no checkpoints inside a fight, and a letter grade at the end of every level.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Cuphead
Cuphead is a top-performing option in Cuphead.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Peashooter | The starting weapon, with straight forward shots, unlimited range and the most reliable damage per second at distance. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Three hit points and no checkpoints | Cuphead and Mugman start each fight with three hit points, and a boss level has no mid fight save, so dying in phase four sends you back to the opening. |
How to Play Cuphead
Cuphead focuses on a balanced approach to content.

- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested

Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |

| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Pink parry | Anything flashing pink can be slapped in mid air for a parry, which bounces you upward and awards a super meter card. |
How to Play Mugman
Mugman focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair Spread with Pink parry and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Ms. Chalice

Core Setup

| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Super meter cards | Damage dealt and parries fill cards up to a maximum of five. |

Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Damage rush playstyle

Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Lobber | Throws slow arcing projectiles that pass over low cover and deal solid damage per hit. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Two weapon loadout with one charm | You carry two weapons and one charm at a time, bought from Porkrind's Emporium with coins, and weapons can be swapped mid fight with a single button. |
How to Play Damage rush playstyle

Why this role works: This one leans on Two weapon loadout with one charm rather than raw numbers, and Lobber is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Parry survival playstyle

Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Charge | Holds fire to build one heavy shot that hits harder than several seconds of Peashooter fire. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Letter grade scoring | Levels grade from D up to A Plus on time taken, hit points left, parries performed and super meter used. |

Why this role works: Charge and Letter grade scoring pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Mugman: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Cuphead once you understand core mechanics and have access to Peashooter
- Keep a Ms. Chalice setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Parry survival playstyle for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Parry the first pink object of every fight even when you do not need the card. Building the habit early means you reach five cards before the phase where a Super Art actually saves the run.
- Swap weapons between phases rather than committing to one. Spread for a phase you can stand next to, Charge for a phase that pushes you to the far wall, on the same attempt.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
