Cuphead is Studio MDHR's hand inked run and gun built around 19 base game boss fights, six run and gun stages and three mausoleum challenges across three Inkwell Isles and Inkwell Hell. Every frame was drawn and painted by hand in a 1930s cartoon style, with a soundtrack recorded by a live jazz band. You get three hit points, no checkpoints inside a fight, and a letter grade at the end of every level.

Combat in Cuphead rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Three hit points and no checkpoints

Cuphead and Mugman start each fight with three hit points, and a boss level has no mid fight save, so dying in phase four sends you back to the opening. The Heart charm buys a fourth pip at the cost of damage output.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Pink parry

Anything flashing pink can be slapped in mid air for a parry, which bounces you upward and awards a super meter card. Ms. Chalice parries by dashing into pink objects instead, and a clean dash parry refunds her dash and her double jump.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Super meter cards

Damage dealt and parries fill cards up to a maximum of five. One card buys an EX version of your current weapon, and a full five sets off a Super Art such as Energy Beam, Invincibility or Giant Ghost.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Two weapon loadout with one charm

You carry two weapons and one charm at a time, bought from Porkrind's Emporium with coins, and weapons can be swapped mid fight with a single button. Each run and gun stage hides five coins.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Letter grade scoring

Levels grade from D up to A Plus on time taken, hit points left, parries performed and super meter used. An S rank needs Expert difficulty, zero damage taken, at least three parries and heavy super usage.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Three hit points and no checkpoints + Pink parry

Cuphead and Mugman start each fight with three hit points, and a boss level has no mid fight save, so dying in phase four sends you back to the opening. When combined with Pink parry, anything flashing pink can be slapped in mid air for a parry, which bounces you upward and awards a super meter card. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Super meter cards + Two weapon loadout with one charm

Damage dealt and parries fill cards up to a maximum of five. Paired with Two weapon loadout with one charm, you carry two weapons and one charm at a time, bought from porkrind's emporium with coins, and weapons can be swapped mid fight with a single button. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Letter grade scoring as a Multiplier

Levels grade from D up to A Plus on time taken, hit points left, parries performed and super meter used. An S rank needs Expert difficulty, zero damage taken, at least three parries and heavy super usage. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Letter grade scoring optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Three hit points and no checkpoints for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Pink parry and Super meter cards for combo damage
  4. Use Two weapon loadout with one charm to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Parry the first pink object of every fight even when you do not need the card. Building the habit early means you reach five cards before the phase where a Super Art actually saves the run.
  3. Position using Three hit points and no checkpoints to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Pink parry: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Inkwell Isle One but will get you killed in Inkwell Isle Four.
