FromSoftware released Scholar of the First Sin in April 2015, rebuilding Dark Souls II on a DirectX 11 renderer, folding in all three Crown DLCs and shuffling enemy placement so returning players could not run their old routes. Drangleic still runs on Adaptability, the stat the game never explains: it feeds Agility, which starts at 85 and caps at 120, and Agility decides how many invincibility frames a roll carries. Aldia now appears as a burning apparition at bonfires and returns as an optional final boss after Nashandra.

DARK SOULS II: Scholar of the First Sin features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Majula: Starting Area

The hub, and the only truly safe place in Drangleic. The Emerald Herald handles every level up, Sweet Shalquoir sells rings, Maughlin sells armour, and the bottomless pit beside the mansion hides an entire optional area.

What to Do Here

Forest of Fallen Giants: Early Game

The first real area and the one that teaches the ambush pattern the rest of the game repeats. The Pursuer shows up here early and again later, and the Cardinal Tower bonfire is the safest respawn point for the whole region.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Soul Memory matchmaking. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Estoc if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Heide's Tower of Flame.

Heide's Tower of Flame: Mid Game

A drowned white stone ruin with Old Knights patrolling wide platforms. It is optional early but worth doing, because two bosses here drop souls and the path continues down to No-man's Wharf and the Blue Cathedral.

Key RewardsDragonrider Soul, Soul of the Old Dragonslayer, the Blue Sentinels covenant, Heide Knight equipment

What to Do Here

  • This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
  • Zweihander becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
  • Master Power stancing for the boss encounters.
  • Check our boss guide if you get stuck.

Iron Keep: Late Game

A fortress sunk into lava with Alonne Knights on every walkway and the game's most notorious archer placements. It sits directly above Earthen Peak in a piece of geography nobody has ever managed to defend, and it holds two boss fights.

AttributeDetail
DifficultySoul Level 55 to 85
Key RewardsSmelter Demon Soul, Soul of the Old Iron King, access to Belfry Sol and the Bell Keepers
Recommended BuildKnight
Key EquipmentZweihander

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Zweihander should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Bonfire Ascetics mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Drangleic Castle.

Drangleic Castle: Endgame

The late game gate, opened only after collecting the Great Souls. Ruin Sentinels and Royal Guards defend the halls, and past the Looking Glass Knight the King's Passage leads to Velstadt and the way into the Undead Crypt.

DifficultySoul Level 85 to 120
Key RewardsLooking Glass Knight Soul, the King's Ring from Velstadt, the route to Vendrick and Nashandra
Recommended BuildKnight
Key EquipmentZweihander

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Sorcerer for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Majula → Forest of Fallen Giants → Heide's Tower of Flame → Iron Keep → Drangleic Castle. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
