Dark Souls: Remastered Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Dark Souls: Remastered walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Dark Souls: Remastered is the game that defined an entire genre. Its interconnected world — where shortcuts loop back on themselves in satisfying 'aha' moments — remains unmatched in level design. Every door, elevator, and hidden path connects areas in ways that reward exploration and memory. The difficulty is legendary but fair: every death teaches a lesson, every boss has exploitable patterns, and mastery feels genuinely earned. The Remastered version runs at 60fps with improved textures and restored online play for up to 6 players. If you've never played a Souls game, this is where it all started.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Firelink Shrine

The central hub area connecting to multiple paths. Contains the Crestfallen Warrior (hints), Frampt (Lordvessel), and access to the graveyard (Zweihander), New Londo Ruins, and Undead Burg. Return here frequently — new NPCs appear as you progress.

Level/Difficulty: SL 1-10 (hub area) Key Rewards: Zweihander (graveyard), Homeward Bones, NPC vendors, bonfire kindling point

What to Do in Firelink Shrine

  1. Learn interconnected world. Unlike DS3's bonfire warping, Dark Souls 1 has no fast travel until mid-game (Lordvessel). Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Pyromancer as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. The Master Key starting gift opens shortcuts throughout the game — most notably skipping Blighttown entirely via the Valley of the Drakes. It's the default recommendation for experienced players.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Quelaag's Furysword or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand interconnected world fundamentals
  • Pyromancer selected and functional
  • Firelink Shrine main content cleared
  • Ready for Undead Burg

Phase 2: Early Game — Undead Burg

The intended first area with basic Hollow soldiers teaching combat fundamentals. Contains the Taurus Demon boss and the famous Hellkite Dragon bridge. The shortcut back to Firelink (through the tower) is the first 'aha' moment of interconnection. Solaire is found here for co-op summoning.

Level/Difficulty: SL 5-20 Key Rewards: Claymore (dragon bridge), Solaire's summon sign, Taurus Demon Soul, shortcut to Firelink

What to Do in Undead Burg

  1. Work on humanity system. Humanity serves multiple purposes: using one at a bonfire restores your human form (enabling summoning/invasions), spending Humanity at bonfires kindles them (more Estus charges), and holding soft Humanity (counter at top-left, max 99) increases item discovery rate and Chaos weapon damage. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Quelaag's Furysword if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Upgrade your Pyromancy Flame fully before investing in offensive stats. At Ascended +5, even a SL1 character deals massive fire damage with Great Combustion and Great Chaos Fireball.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Anor Londo.
  5. Consider whether Knight might suit your playstyle better than Pyromancer.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • humanity system integrated into gameplay
  • Quelaag's Furysword acquired
  • Undead Burg fully cleared
  • Ready for Anor Londo

Phase 3: Mid Game — Anor Londo

The stunning golden city of the gods, accessed via a cutscene from Sen's Fortress. Contains Ornstein and Smough — the most iconic boss duo in the series. The silver knight archers on the ledge are a notorious skill check. Obtaining the Lordvessel from Gwynevere unlocks fast travel.

Level/Difficulty: SL 40-60 Key Rewards: Lordvessel (fast travel), Giant Blacksmith, Ornstein/Smough Souls, Ring of the Sun Princess

What to Do in Anor Londo

  1. Master weapon scaling. Weapons have letter grades (S/A/B/C/D/E) for how well they scale with each stat. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Black Knight Halberd. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Kindle every bonfire you plan to use repeatedly. Kindling costs 1 Humanity and adds 5 Estus charges (up to 20 with the Rite of Kindling from the Catacombs).
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in covenant online play for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • weapon scaling mastered
  • Black Knight Halberd acquired or in progress
  • Anor Londo fully cleared
  • Ready for Blighttown

Phase 4: Late Game — Blighttown

The most infamous area in Souls history — a vertical swamp with poison, framerate drops (fixed in Remaster), and toxic blowdart snipers. The shortcut entrance from Valley of the Drakes skips most of the area. Quelaag's Domain at the bottom contains the spider boss and the hidden Chaos Servant covenant.

Level/Difficulty: SL 25-40 Key Rewards: Quelaag's Soul, Power Within pyromancy, Iaito, Chaos Servant covenant, Daughter of Chaos bonfire

What to Do in Blighttown

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Knight or Pyromancer with optimized gear.
  2. Black Knight Halberd should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Fast roll (under 25% equip load) has significantly more invincibility frames than medium roll. Consider using lighter armor to stay under 25% for difficult boss fights.
  4. weight ratio optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Ash Lake.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Black Knight Halberd upgraded to max
  • Blighttown fully cleared
  • Ready for Ash Lake

Phase 5: Endgame — Ash Lake

One of the most hidden and atmospheric areas in gaming — a vast underground lake beneath a canopy of archtrees. Accessed through two illusory walls in the Great Hollow (itself hidden in Blighttown). Contains the Hydra mini-boss and the Path of the Dragon covenant for dragon transformation.

Level/Difficulty: SL 30+ (optional) Key Rewards: Dragon Head Stone, Miracle Synergy boost, Great Magic Barrier (nearby), atmospheric experience

What to Do in Ash Lake

  1. Ash Lake tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Backstabs deal 3-4x damage and have a generous positioning window. Circle-strafe to the enemy's right side and press R1 when behind them. This trivializes many humanoid enemies and invaders.
  3. The endgame loop: run Ash Lake, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Deprived for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where weight ratio mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Ash Lake fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Going to the Catacombs or New Londo Ruins first — the intended early path is Undead Burg → Parish → Depths → Blighttown. The Catacombs skeletons don't stay dead without divine weapons.
  • Leveling Resistance — this stat is nearly useless. Every other stat provides better value per level. Never invest a single point in Resistance.
  • Upgrading weapons along the wrong path — standard upgrade to +15 is almost always best. Lightning and Fire remove stat scaling, making them worse than +15 at high stat levels.
  • Fighting the Hellkite Dragon on the bridge — run past it. The dragon can be cheesed with arrows from below but fighting it directly at low level is nearly impossible.
  • Not returning to the Undead Asylum — the return trip grants the Rusted Iron Ring and the Peculiar Doll (access to the Painted World). Access it via the nest at Firelink Shrine.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. The Master Key starting gift opens shortcuts throughout the game — most notably skipping Blighttown entirely via the Valley of the Drakes. It's the default recommendation for experienced players.
  2. Upgrade your Pyromancy Flame fully before investing in offensive stats. At Ascended +5, even a SL1 character deals massive fire damage with Great Combustion and Great Chaos Fireball.
  3. Kindle every bonfire you plan to use repeatedly. Kindling costs 1 Humanity and adds 5 Estus charges (up to 20 with the Rite of Kindling from the Catacombs).
  4. Fast roll (under 25% equip load) has significantly more invincibility frames than medium roll. Consider using lighter armor to stay under 25% for difficult boss fights.
  5. Backstabs deal 3-4x damage and have a generous positioning window. Circle-strafe to the enemy's right side and press R1 when behind them. This trivializes many humanoid enemies and invaders.
