Dark Souls: Remastered is the game that defined an entire genre. Its interconnected world — where shortcuts loop back on themselves in satisfying 'aha' moments — remains unmatched in level design. Every door, elevator, and hidden path connects areas in ways that reward exploration and memory. The difficulty is legendary but fair: every death teaches a lesson, every boss has exploitable patterns, and mastery feels genuinely earned. The Remastered version runs at 60fps with improved textures and restored online play for up to 6 players. If you've never played a Souls game, this is where it all started.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

S-Tier: Black Knight Halberd
If the Black Knight in Darkroot Basin drops this, your run is essentially won. It has massive base damage, 20% bonus vs. demons, and a wide sweeping moveset. Available before any major boss. It's the most overpowered early-game drop in any Souls game — the 20% drop rate makes it a popular restart target.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Firelink Shrine
- Quelaag's Furysword → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Zweihander → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Black Knight Halberd → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- The Master Key starting gift opens shortcuts throughout the game — most notably skipping Blighttown entirely via the Valley of the Drakes. It's the default recommendation for experienced players.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
