DayZ Equipment Guide — Best Equipment Ranked

Complete DayZ equipment guide. Every equipment option ranked with stats, best builds, and how to get them.

DayZ is Bohemia Interactive's hardcore survival game set in the post-Soviet country of Chernarus after a zombie apocalypse. Starting with nothing on the coast, you must find food, water, weapons, and shelter while navigating both infected AI and the real threat — other players. DayZ's survival mechanics are among the most detailed in gaming, simulating hunger, thirst, temperature, disease, blood types, and wound infections. Every encounter with another player is a tense negotiation between cooperation and betrayal.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Chernarus
  2. KA-M → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Mosin 91/30 → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. M4A1 → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Eat everything you find early — starvation kills fast and is the #1 cause of freshspawn death. Fruit, canned food, animal fat — consume it all to build up your calorie reserve.
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
