DayZ Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

DayZ is Bohemia Interactive's hardcore survival game set in the post-Soviet country of Chernarus after a zombie apocalypse. Starting with nothing on the coast, you must find food, water, weapons, and shelter while navigating both infected AI and the real threat — other players. DayZ's survival mechanics are among the most detailed in gaming, simulating hunger, thirst, temperature, disease, blood types, and wound infections. Every encounter with another player is a tense negotiation between cooperation and betrayal.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Quick Progression Summary

Phase 1: Getting Started — Chernarus

The main map — a 225 km² post-Soviet landscape with cities, forests, military bases, and coastline. The coast is the spawn zone, and quality of loot increases as you move north and west. Landmarks include Elektro, Cherno, NWAF, and Tisy.

What to Do in Chernarus

1. Learn disease system. Diseases include cholera (dirty water), salmonella (raw meat), influenza (cold/wet exposure), and wound infection (bandaging with dirty rags). Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
2. Pick Coastal Looter as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
3. Eat everything you find early — starvation kills fast and is the #1 cause of freshspawn death. Fruit, canned food, animal fat — consume it all to build up your calorie reserve.
4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — KA-M or whatever's available.
5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

Phase 2: Early Game — Livonia

A DLC map with denser forests, more rain, and a bear-heavy ecosystem. Smaller than Chernarus but with different town layouts and military locations. The constant rain makes temperature management more challenging.

What to Do in Livonia

1. Work on vehicle repair. Vehicles require specific parts to operate: wheels, spark plug, battery, and radiator. This system becomes critical from here on.
2. Farm for KA-M if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
3. Duct tape repairs ruined items to Worn status. Always carry duct tape — it can save a ruined plate carrier or weapon from being useless.
4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Elektrozavodsk.
5. Consider whether Freshspawn might suit your playstyle better than Coastal Looter.

Phase 2 Checklist

Phase 3: Mid Game — Elektrozavodsk

A major coastal city and frequent spawn point. Contains a hospital, fire station, and police station for early gear. Extremely dangerous due to high player traffic — gunfights are constant. Good for quick gearing but risky.

What to Do in Elektrozavodsk

1. Master base building. Bases use walls, watchtowers, and gates built from Nails, Planks, and Metal Sheets. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
2. Start working toward M4A1. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
3. Cut up clothing into rags for bandages with a knife. You'll need bandages constantly for zombie scratches and PvP wounds. Disinfect rags with alcohol tincture.
4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
5. Start investing in hunting and cooking for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

Phase 4: Late Game — Northwest Airfield

One of the most lucrative military locations in Chernarus with barracks, hangars, and ATC tower. Multiple military loot spawns make it a primary destination for geared players. PvP hotspot — expect snipers and ambushes.

Level/Difficulty: Mid-late game Key Rewards: Military weapons, plate carriers, combat helmets, NVGs

What to Do in Northwest Airfield

1. Finalize your build. You should be running Freshspawn or Coastal Looter with optimized gear.
2. M4A1 should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
3. Inland loot is much better than coastal. Military bases, hunting cabins, and industrial areas inland have better weapons, tools, and supplies than the coast.
4. blood types optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Tisy Military Base.

Phase 4 Checklist

• Build fully optimized
• M4A1 upgraded to max
• Northwest Airfield fully cleared
• Ready for Tisy Military Base

Phase 5: Endgame — Tisy Military Base

The northernmost and highest-tier military base in Chernarus. Contains contaminated zones requiring NBC gear. Spawns the rarest weapons including the M4A1. The trek north is long and dangerous. PvP here is frequent and deadly.

What to Do in Tisy Military Base

1. Tisy Military Base tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
2. Stay dry or risk hypothermia and disease. Wring out wet clothing by pressing the action key. Stand near a fire to warm up. Carry a raincoat when available.
3. The endgame loop: run Tisy Military Base, optimize gear, push harder content.
4. Experiment with Bandit for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
5. This is where blood types mastery separates good players from great ones.

Common Progression Mistakes

• Spending too long on the coast looting houses — the coast has the worst loot and the most players. Grab a knife, find food, and head inland immediately.
• Drinking from streams or ponds without purification — this causes cholera, which drains health and requires Tetracycline to cure. Only drink from water pumps or purified water.
• Not disinfecting rags before using as bandages — dirty rags cause wound infection. Use alcohol tincture or iodine on rags first.
• Shooting zombies in cities — gunfire draws every zombie in the area and alerts nearby players. Use melee or a suppressed weapon inside towns.
• Running through the night without warmth — nighttime temperatures drop severely and hypothermia sets in fast. Carry matches and a fire kit, or extra warm clothing.
