Dead by Daylight Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Dead by Daylight walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Dead by Daylight is Behaviour Interactive's asymmetric 4v1 horror game where one player controls a Killer hunting four Survivors who must repair generators and escape. With 35+ Killers from original characters to licensed icons (Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Resident Evil's Nemesis), each with unique powers, and 40+ Survivors with unique perks, the game offers deep strategic gameplay. The core loop of chasing, looping, and generator pressure creates intense matches lasting 10-15 minutes.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Macmillan Estate

An industrial realm with medium-sized maps and balanced tile distribution. Suffocation Pit and Coal Tower offer varied gameplay. Generally considered a balanced realm for both Killers and Survivors.

Level/Difficulty: All skill levels Key Rewards: Balanced map design, learning fundamentals

What to Do in Macmillan Estate

  1. Learn generator repair. Survivors must repair 5 of 7 generators (80 seconds solo, 47 with two, faster with toolboxes) to power exit gates. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Blight as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Run the Killer for 60+ seconds and you've won the chase — that's enough time for teammates to complete 1-2 generators while the Killer is occupied with you.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Dead Hard or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand generator repair fundamentals
  • Blight selected and functional
  • Macmillan Estate main content cleared
  • Ready for Autohaven Wreckers

Phase 2: Early Game — Autohaven Wreckers

A junkyard realm with car-based tiles and multiple pallets. Blood Lodge is Survivor-sided with strong window loops. Gas Heaven is more Killer-friendly. Common in rotation.

Level/Difficulty: All skill levels Key Rewards: Pallet-heavy maps, loop practice

What to Do in Autohaven Wreckers

  1. Work on perk builds. Each character brings 4 perks from a pool of 100+. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Dead Hard if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Generators take 90 seconds solo, 47 with two players. Three players on one gen is less efficient than splitting up. Optimal: 3 Survivors on separate gens, 1 in chase.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Coldwind Farm.
  5. Consider whether Nurse might suit your playstyle better than Blight.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • perk builds integrated into gameplay
  • Dead Hard acquired
  • Autohaven Wreckers fully cleared
  • Ready for Coldwind Farm

Phase 3: Mid Game — Coldwind Farm

Corn-field maps with high grass that obscures vision. Rotten Fields is extremely large and Survivor-sided. Fractured Cowshed has a strong main building. The corn makes tracking difficult for Killers.

Level/Difficulty: Intermediate+ Key Rewards: Stealth-heavy gameplay, vision management

What to Do in Coldwind Farm

  1. Master bloodweb progression. Characters level through Bloodwebs — spending Bloodpoints to unlock perks, add-ons, items, and offerings. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Borrowed Time. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Don't unhook in the Killer's face without Borrowed Time (now basekit) — wait for the Killer to leave or have a teammate take a protection hit.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in killer powers for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • bloodweb progression mastered
  • Borrowed Time acquired or in progress
  • Coldwind Farm fully cleared
  • Ready for Haddonfield

Phase 4: Late Game — Haddonfield

Licensed Halloween map, historically extremely Survivor-sided with powerful house loops and balanced windows. Multiple reworks have improved balance. Contains unique building layouts.

Level/Difficulty: All skill levels Key Rewards: Strong Survivor loops, house-based gameplay

What to Do in Haddonfield

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Nurse or Blight with optimized gear.
  2. Borrowed Time should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Learn to spin (360) at pallets for free hits on the Killer. Quick lateral movement makes it hard for Killers to land basic attacks at pallet drops.
  4. survivor loops optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Raccoon City.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Borrowed Time upgraded to max
  • Haddonfield fully cleared
  • Ready for Raccoon City

Phase 5: Endgame — Raccoon City

Licensed Resident Evil indoor map with tight corridors and multiple floors. Notorious for long matches due to size and confusing layout. Indoor maps limit Killers who rely on ranged attacks.

Level/Difficulty: Advanced Key Rewards: Indoor map experience, corridor-based chases

What to Do in Raccoon City

  1. Raccoon City tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Hexes (Hex: Ruin, Hex: Devour Hope) can be cleansed permanently by finding and breaking the Hex Totem. Boons convert Dull Totems into Survivor benefits.
  3. The endgame loop: run Raccoon City, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Wraith for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where survivor loops mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Raccoon City fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • All 4 Survivors working on one generator — this is massively inefficient. Split up: 3 on separate generators, 1 in chase. Generator time is the Survivors' most important resource.
  • Camping the hook as Killer — face-camping sacrifices map pressure. Efficient Survivors complete 3 generators during one camp. Proxy-camping (staying nearby) is stronger if you patrol nearby gens.
  • Self-caring in a corner while injured — Self-Care takes 32 seconds solo. Another Survivor heals you in 16 seconds. Spending 32 seconds not on a generator often loses the game.
  • Not running toward teammates when injured and being chased — running toward the edge of the map wastes team time. Run toward generators so your chase creates pressure.
  • Using all pallets in the first chase — pallets are a limited resource. Drop pallets only when necessary. Safe pallets can be looped 2-3 times before dropping.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Run the Killer for 60+ seconds and you've won the chase — that's enough time for teammates to complete 1-2 generators while the Killer is occupied with you.
  2. Generators take 90 seconds solo, 47 with two players. Three players on one gen is less efficient than splitting up. Optimal: 3 Survivors on separate gens, 1 in chase.
  3. Don't unhook in the Killer's face without Borrowed Time (now basekit) — wait for the Killer to leave or have a teammate take a protection hit.
  4. Learn to spin (360) at pallets for free hits on the Killer. Quick lateral movement makes it hard for Killers to land basic attacks at pallet drops.
  5. Hexes (Hex: Ruin, Hex: Devour Hope) can be cleansed permanently by finding and breaking the Hex Totem. Boons convert Dull Totems into Survivor benefits.
