Dead Island 2 drops you into a quarantined Los Angeles the game insists on calling HELL-A, playing a Slayer whose bite made them immune instead of dead. Dambuster Studios released it on 21 April 2023 as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC and brought it to Steam a year later on 22 April 2024. The reason to play it is the gore model marketed as FLESH, which peels zombies apart layer by layer based on where and with what you hit them, and the reason to stay is a skill card deck you can rebuild between fights at no cost.

Resource management and crafting determine how quickly your power scales. This guide covers what to prioritize, where to farm, and how to avoid wasting resources on the wrong upgrades.

Upgrade Path

Early Game (Bel-Air to Beverly Hills and the Halperin Hotel)

  1. Upgrade your starting weapons to functional level
  2. Craft basic defensive gear
  3. Save specialty materials, since you'll need them later
  4. Focus on Carving Katana once accessible

Mid Game (Monarch Studios)

  1. Push Carving Katana to mid-level upgrades
  2. Start collecting materials for Crushing Sledgehammer
  3. Craft situational consumables for boss fights
  4. Upgrade build-specific gear pieces

Late Game (Venice Beach to The Pier)

  1. Max out Crushing Sledgehammer. This is your top priority
  2. Complete your build's core gear set
  3. Craft endgame consumables
  4. Optional: upgrade secondary weapons for variety

Crafting Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Spreading upgrades across multiple weapons: Focus one weapon to max before diversifying.
  2. Hoarding materials: Use them. The game provides enough if you farm efficiently.
  3. Upgrading the wrong gear: Check our builds guide before investing.
  4. Ignoring Monarch Studios farming: This area has the best resource-to-time ratio in mid-game.
  5. Crafting consumables too early: Save specialty materials for late-game recipes.

Resource Efficiency Tips

  • Rebuild your skill card deck between areas rather than settling on one loadout. There is no respec cost and no limit on swaps, so a deck that suits the enclosed Halperin Hotel is the wrong deck for the open Venice Beach boardwalk.
  • Farm Monarch Studios during mid-game for the best return on time
  • Check the walkthrough to know when each resource becomes available
  • Match your farming route to your build. Some classes farm faster in certain areas
