Dead Island 2 drops you into a quarantined Los Angeles the game insists on calling HELL-A, playing a Slayer whose bite made them immune instead of dead. Dambuster Studios released it on 21 April 2023 as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC and brought it to Steam a year later on 22 April 2024. The reason to play it is the gore model marketed as FLESH, which peels zombies apart layer by layer based on where and with what you hit them, and the reason to stay is a skill card deck you can rebuild between fights at no cost.
Dead Island 2 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bel-Air | Starting area, roughly the first few hours | First weapon mods, early skill cards, introduction to the workbench | Dani |
| 2 | Beverly Hills and the Halperin Hotel | Early to mid game | Lockboxes and keys, side quest chains, denser weapon drops | Dani |
| 3 | Monarch Studios | Mid game | Themed weapon variants, enclosed arena encounters, backlot collectibles | Jacob |
| 4 | Venice Beach | Mid to late game | Open-area encounters, shock element opportunities, side quest density | Jacob |
| 5 | The Pier | Late game | High-tier weapon drops, tougher special zombie types, late-story progression | Jacob |
Bel-Air: Starting Area
The opening area, a wealthy hillside neighbourhood of mansions and pools that teaches the FLESH system on a manageable enemy density. It is also where the game's tone lands: expensive houses full of very ordinary problems.

|---|---|
| Difficulty | Starting area, roughly the first few hours |
| Key Rewards | First weapon mods, early skill cards, introduction to the workbench |
| Recommended Role | Dani |
| Key Weapons | Carving Katana |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of The FLESH damage model. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first weapons upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Beverly Hills and the Halperin Hotel.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Beverly Hills and the Halperin Hotel: Early Game
The Halperin Hotel served as an evacuation point during the outbreak, screening survivors for infection before moving them out of Los Angeles, which explains the state you find it in. It is one of the densest collectible areas in the game.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early to mid game |
| Key Rewards | Lockboxes and keys, side quest chains, denser weapon drops |
| Recommended Role | Dani |
| Key Weapons | Carving Katana |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Skill cards across Abilities, Survivor, Slayer and Numen. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Carving Katana if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Monarch Studios.
Monarch Studios: Mid Game
A film backlot full of sets, props and the specific joke of fighting real zombies among fake ones. The layout is more vertical and enclosed than the residential areas, which changes how curveballs and crowd control play.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid game |
| Key Rewards | Themed weapon variants, enclosed arena encounters, backlot collectibles |
| Recommended Role | Jacob |
| Key Weapons | Carving Katana |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Crushing Sledgehammer becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Elemental weapon mods and perks for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Venice Beach: Late Game
Open boardwalk and canal areas with more sightlines than the interiors that precede it. Water is on the map here in a way it is not elsewhere, which is where a shock-modded weapon earns its slot.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late game |
| Key Rewards | Open-area encounters, shock element opportunities, side quest density |
| Recommended Role | Jacob |
| Key Weapons | Crushing Sledgehammer |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Crushing Sledgehammer should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Curveball throwables mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into The Pier.
The Pier: Endgame
The Santa Monica pier section, tight and crowded with the game's harder enemy mixes. By the time you reach it you should be running two elements and a working curveball rotation rather than one strong weapon.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late game |
| Key Rewards | High-tier weapon drops, tougher special zombie types, late-story progression |
| Recommended Role | Jacob |
| Key Weapons | Crushing Sledgehammer |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Carla for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Bel-Air → Beverly Hills and the Halperin Hotel → Monarch Studios → Venice Beach → The Pier. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
