Dead Island 2 drops you into a quarantined Los Angeles the game insists on calling HELL-A, playing a Slayer whose bite made them immune instead of dead. Dambuster Studios released it on 21 April 2023 as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC and brought it to Steam a year later on 22 April 2024. The reason to play it is the gore model marketed as FLESH, which peels zombies apart layer by layer based on where and with what you hit them, and the reason to stay is a skill card deck you can rebuild between fights at no cost.

Your choice of weapons defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

S-Tier: Crushing Sledgehammer

A two-handed blunt weapon in the crushing family, slow to swing and devastating on impact. Against the FLESH model it shatters bone rather than severing, which knocks down groups and breaks legs instead of removing arms.

Best builds using Crushing Sledgehammer: Pairs naturally with Jacob thanks to how their stat scaling lines up.

A-Tier: Carving Katana

A fast sharp weapon in the carving family, built for limb removal. Cutting an arm off strips a zombie of its attack immediately, which makes sharp weapons better crowd control than their damage numbers suggest.

A-Tier: Combat Shotgun

Firearms arrive later than melee in Dead Island 2 and ammunition stays scarce, so the shotgun is a problem solver rather than a primary. It handles the moments where a special zombie has cornered you and melee range is a losing proposition.

B-Tier: Molotov curveball

The thrown incendiary, on a cooldown rather than a limited stock. Fire is the most reliable way to clear a corridor because burning zombies stop advancing in a straight line and start dying on their own.

B-Tier: Meat Bait curveball

A thrown lure that pulls zombies to a spot. It is the least glamorous tool in the game and the most useful for the objective-heavy missions, since a bunched crowd is one Molotov away from being solved.

AttributeDetail
TierB
Best ForPulling a crowd off an objective or grouping them for an area attack.

Weapons Progression Path

The order you should acquire weapons as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Bel-Air
  2. Carving Katana → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Combat Shotgun → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Crushing Sledgehammer → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Weapons Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary weapon before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your weapons to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Rebuild your skill card deck between areas rather than settling on one loadout. There is no respec cost and no limit on swaps, so a deck that suits the enclosed Halperin Hotel is the wrong deck for the open Venice Beach boardwalk.
  • Check our tier list for how weapons rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
