Deadzone: Rogue is a first person roguelite from Prophecy Games, set aboard the colony ship ISS-X after its machines turned hostile. It entered Early Access on 29 April 2025 and hit version 1.0 on 11 August 2025, and it currently sits around 86 percent positive from more than eight thousand Steam reviews. A run means fighting through sectors of a zone, thirty of them per story zone with a boss waiting at sectors 10, 20 and 30, alone or with up to two friends. You carry a primary, a secondary, a melee weapon and a grenade, and every one of them can take elemental affixes that turn a shotgun into a crowd control tool or a submachine gun into a freezing hose. There are no character classes; your build comes from the perks, augments and armour traits you pick up during the run, and from the permanent Tech Masteries you unlock between runs with Tech and Tech Components. Difficulty runs across five tiers from Adventure through Normal, Hard and Expert to Nightmare, and the currency drop rates scale with it.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

S-Tier: Weakpoint crit marksman
Built around aiming augments in the Crit and Weakpoint families, this build turns precise shots into enormous single target damage and melts bosses in a fraction of the time other builds need. It falls apart in a room full of fast enemies, so it needs a crowd control secondary.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | AR-70 Vanguard | A versatile automatic rifle described in game as useful at close and medium ranges, and the fastest firing assault rifle in the arsenal. |
| Core Gear | A high accuracy primary such as the M-100 Crosspoint or the MP-18L Revenant, plus a shotgun secondary for anything that gets close | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Critical chance and critical damage from armour traits first, then weakpoint damage augments, then magazine size | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Zones, sectors and boss floors | The story is split into zones: Zone 1 Who Am I?, Zone 2 Keep It Together and Zone 3 Get Out Of My Head, with a fourth added in later updates. |
How to Play Weakpoint crit marksman
Hold a corridor, land headshots on approaching enemies, and save every grenade for the moment a boss exposes its weakpoint.
Built around aiming augments in the Crit and Weakpoint families, this build turns precise shots into enormous single target damage and melts bosses in a fraction of the time other builds need. It falls apart in a room full of fast enemies, so it needs a crowd control secondary.
Why this build works: AR-70 Vanguard does the damage and Zones, sectors and boss floors keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. Core gear like A high accuracy primary such as the M-100 Crosspoint or the MP-18L Revenant, plus a shotgun secondary for anything that gets close pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Clear stat priority (Critical chance and critical damage from armour traits first, then weakpoint damage augments, then magazine size) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
S-Tier: Elemental proc gunner
The strongest general purpose approach in the game, because elemental debuffs scale with how often you hit rather than how hard. Pairing a very high fire rate weapon with a matched Elemental perk means enemies die to stacked debuffs rather than to bullets.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | VLR Arcblade | The standout submachine gun, combining a high proc rate, a large magazine for its class and a very fast fire rate. |
| Core Gear | The VLR Arcblade submachine gun or T30 Nova Burst shotgun with a Void or Cryo affix, and a matching Elemental perk | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Elemental damage on armour traits, then fire rate, then ammo capacity augments | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Elemental affixes and proc effects | Weapons take elemental affixes that apply a debuff on hit rather than simply adding damage. |
How to Play Elemental proc gunner
Spray into groups to spread the debuff, let procs do the killing, and rely on Chill or Corruption to control the room rather than trying to out damage it.
The strongest general purpose approach in the game, because elemental debuffs scale with how often you hit rather than how hard. Pairing a very high fire rate weapon with a matched Elemental perk means enemies die to stacked debuffs rather than to bullets.
Why this build works: Pair VLR Arcblade with Elemental affixes and proc effects and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. Core gear like The VLR Arcblade submachine gun or T30 Nova Burst shotgun with a Void or Cryo affix, and a matching Elemental perk pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Clear stat priority (Elemental damage on armour traits, then fire rate, then ammo capacity augments) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Melee brawler
Combat perks in the melee family plus the Martial Master special augment turn the Energy Axe or Arc Lance into a real primary weapon. It is the highest risk build in the game because closing distance on a boss floor with 100 base health is unforgiving.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | T30 Nova Burst | The best shotgun in the game thanks to a high rate of fire, a large magazine and multiple pellets per shot that each carry their own proc chance. |
| Core Gear | The Arc Lance exotic polearm or the Energy Axe, with movement speed armour traits and Afterburners for the dash bonus | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Movement speed and shield recharge first, then melee damage, then health | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Perks, augments and armour traits | Perks come in families and you can only carry one Protective perk covering health, shields or armour and one Elemental perk per run, which forces an early commitment. |
How to Play Melee brawler
Dash into a group, use the Afterburners movement window to reposition constantly, and back out to let shields recharge instead of trading hits.
Combat perks in the melee family plus the Martial Master special augment turn the Energy Axe or Arc Lance into a real primary weapon. It is the highest risk build in the game because closing distance on a boss floor with 100 base health is unforgiving.
Why this build works: Perks, augments and armour traits covers the gap T30 Nova Burst leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. Core gear like The Arc Lance exotic polearm or the Energy Axe, with movement speed armour traits and Afterburners for the dash bonus pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Clear stat priority (Movement speed and shield recharge first, then melee damage, then health) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
B-Tier: Grenade specialist
Grenades take elemental properties and upgrades exactly like other weapons, and the grenade family of Combat perks turns them into a repeatable damage source rather than an emergency button. It is the easiest build to run on higher difficulty tiers because most of your damage happens from cover.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Titan-10 Hellstorm | A minigun that trades mobility and spin up time for continuous output, aimed squarely at players who want to hold a position rather than move through it. |
| Core Gear | An elementally matched grenade, a mid range primary for the gaps between throws, and cooldown reducing items | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Grenade cooldown and elemental damage first, then area damage augments | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Scrap, Tech and the Fabricator | Four currencies do four different jobs. |
How to Play Grenade specialist
Throw into chokepoints before enemies commit, hold ground behind cover, and treat your gun as the tool that finishes what the blast started.
Grenades take elemental properties and upgrades exactly like other weapons, and the grenade family of Combat perks turns them into a repeatable damage source rather than an emergency button. It is the easiest build to run on higher difficulty tiers because most of your damage happens from cover.
Why this build works: This one leans on Scrap, Tech and the Fabricator rather than raw numbers, and Titan-10 Hellstorm is what makes that trade pay off. Core gear like An elementally matched grenade, a mid range primary for the gaps between throws, and cooldown reducing items pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Clear stat priority (Grenade cooldown and elemental damage first, then area damage augments) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
B-Tier: Pet and drone support
The pet family of Combat perks gives you a companion that draws fire and adds sustained damage, which is worth more in three player co-op than solo. It is the most forgiving option for a player still learning boss patterns because something else is soaking attention.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Arc Lance | An exotic polearm and one of only three melee weapons in the game alongside the Energy Axe and the Knife. |
| Core Gear | A pet focused Combat perk line, a versatile primary such as the AR-70 Vanguard and a Protective perk covering shields | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Shield capacity and recharge first, then pet damage, then general weapon damage | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Five difficulty tiers | Adventure, Normal, Hard, Expert and Nightmare each change enemy stats and currency drop rates, and you choose the tier per mission rather than per save. |
How to Play Pet and drone support
Send the pet in first, fight from behind it, and use the breathing room to reposition rather than to push further forward.
The pet family of Combat perks gives you a companion that draws fire and adds sustained damage, which is worth more in three player co-op than solo. It is the most forgiving option for a player still learning boss patterns because something else is soaking attention.
Why this build works: Arc Lance and Five difficulty tiers pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. Core gear like A pet focused Combat perk line, a versatile primary such as the AR-70 Vanguard and a Protective perk covering shields pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Clear stat priority (Shield capacity and recharge first, then pet damage, then general weapon damage) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Elemental proc gunner: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Weakpoint crit marksman once you understand core mechanics and have access to AR-70 Vanguard
- Keep a Melee brawler setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Pet and drone support for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Base health is 100 and base shields are 25, so a single bad room on Expert or Nightmare can end a run; invest in shield recharge before you invest in raw damage.
- Elemental procs roll per hit, which means a submachine gun with a small per shot number applies more debuff than a hard hitting slow weapon with the same affix.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
