Deadzone: Rogue is a first person roguelite from Prophecy Games, set aboard the colony ship ISS-X after its machines turned hostile. It entered Early Access on 29 April 2025 and hit version 1.0 on 11 August 2025, and it currently sits around 86 percent positive from more than eight thousand Steam reviews. A run means fighting through sectors of a zone, thirty of them per story zone with a boss waiting at sectors 10, 20 and 30, alone or with up to two friends. You carry a primary, a secondary, a melee weapon and a grenade, and every one of them can take elemental affixes that turn a shotgun into a crowd control tool or a submachine gun into a freezing hose. There are no character classes; your build comes from the perks, augments and armour traits you pick up during the run, and from the permanent Tech Masteries you unlock between runs with Tech and Tech Components. Difficulty runs across five tiers from Adventure through Normal, Hard and Expert to Nightmare, and the currency drop rates scale with it.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Zone 1: Who Am I?)

The opening story zone aboard the ISS-X, spread across three floors that are each split into three security levels. Its boss Siphon is a large mechanical core with built in laser turrets and three scorpion like stingers, and it is the first real check on whether your build can handle sustained pressure.

Level/Difficulty: Sectors 1 to 30, first zone for every new account Key Rewards: Plasma elemental damage unlock, first Tech Masteries, the Siphon boss fight

What to Do in Zone 1: Who Am I?

  1. Learn Zones, sectors and boss floors. The story is split into zones: Zone 1 Who Am I?, Zone 2 Keep It Together and Zone 3 Get Out Of My Head, with a fourth added in later updates. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Elemental proc gunner as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Base health is 100 and base shields are 25, so a single bad room on Expert or Nightmare can end a run; invest in shield recharge before you invest in raw damage.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: VLR Arcblade or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Zones, sectors and boss floors fundamentals
  • Elemental proc gunner selected and functional
  • Zone 1: Who Am I? main content cleared
  • Ready for Zone 2: Keep It Together

Phase 2: Early Game (Zone 2: Keep It Together)

The second story zone, descending into the lower levels of the ship with tougher enemy mixes and its own specialty missions including Bugged, Glass Cannon, Headhunter, Dual Duel and Redline. Clearing it opens the higher end of the permanent upgrade system.

Level/Difficulty: Sectors 1 to 30, after clearing Zone 1 Key Rewards: Psionic elemental damage, Superior Fate, Tier 10 tech upgrades

What to Do in Zone 2: Keep It Together

  1. Work on Elemental affixes and proc effects. Weapons take elemental affixes that apply a debuff on hit rather than simply adding damage. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for VLR Arcblade if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Elemental procs roll per hit, which means a submachine gun with a small per shot number applies more debuff than a hard hitting slow weapon with the same affix.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Zone 3: Get Out Of My Head.
  5. Consider whether Weakpoint crit marksman might suit your playstyle better than Elemental proc gunner.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Elemental affixes and proc effects integrated into gameplay
  • VLR Arcblade acquired
  • Zone 2: Keep It Together fully cleared
  • Ready for Zone 3: Get Out Of My Head

Phase 3: Mid Game (Zone 3: Get Out Of My Head)

The third story zone, investigating the restricted section of the ship, with specialty missions Legion, Killing Time, Spearhead and Triggerline. Enemy density and boss complexity both step up sharply, and this is where builds that skipped defensive perks stop working.

Level/Difficulty: Sectors 1 to 30, after clearing Zone 2 Key Rewards: Late game augments, highest currency drop rates in the story zones

What to Do in Zone 3: Get Out Of My Head

  1. Master Perks, augments and armour traits. Perks come in families and you can only carry one Protective perk covering health, shields or armour and one Elemental perk per run, which forces an early commitment. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward AR-70 Vanguard. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. You can only carry one Protective perk and one Elemental perk per run, so decide which element you are building around inside the first ten sectors rather than picking whatever drops.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Scrap, Tech and the Fabricator for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Perks, augments and armour traits mastered
  • AR-70 Vanguard acquired or in progress
  • Zone 3: Get Out Of My Head fully cleared
  • Ready for Last Stand

Phase 4: Late Game (Last Stand)

A Zone 1 challenge mission built as 40 waves of enemies rather than a sector run, so you defend rather than advance. It rewards builds that hold ground, which means turrets, pets, grenades and heavy weapons like the Titan-10 Hellstorm.

Level/Difficulty: 40 waves, Zone 1 challenge Key Rewards: Concentrated Tech income, a test of a defensive build without boss mechanics

What to Do in Last Stand

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Weakpoint crit marksman or Elemental proc gunner with optimized gear.
  2. AR-70 Vanguard should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Scrap is a run currency spent at the Fabricator and it vanishes when the run ends, so empty your Scrap on weapon quality upgrades before the final boss rather than saving it.
  4. Five difficulty tiers optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The Long Haul.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • AR-70 Vanguard upgraded to max
  • Last Stand fully cleared
  • Ready for The Long Haul

Phase 5: Endgame (The Long Haul)

The Zone 3 challenge mission and the longest run in the game at 54 sectors, mixing enemies from all three story zones into a single attempt. Anything that works here works everywhere, and it is the standard benchmark for a finished build.

Level/Difficulty: 54 sectors, Zone 3 challenge Key Rewards: Largest single run currency haul, enemies from every zone in one attempt

What to Do in The Long Haul

  1. The Long Haul tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Tech and Tech Components are permanent and buy Tech Masteries between runs, so a failed run that banked Tech is still progress and is not wasted time.
  3. The endgame loop: run The Long Haul, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Pet and drone support for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Five difficulty tiers mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • The Long Haul fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Picking up whichever Elemental perk appears first, then finding the weapon you wanted to build around has a different affix and you cannot swap.
  • Ending a run with a large pile of unspent Scrap, which disappears rather than carrying over into the next attempt.
  • Choosing a slow hard hitting weapon for an elemental build, when proc chance rolls per hit and fire rate is what actually drives the damage.
  • Jumping straight to Nightmare for the better drop rates before the permanent Tech Masteries are built up, which produces more failed runs than banked currency.
  • Running a melee build with no movement speed investment and trying to trade hits with a boss on 100 base health.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Base health is 100 and base shields are 25, so a single bad room on Expert or Nightmare can end a run; invest in shield recharge before you invest in raw damage.
  2. Elemental procs roll per hit, which means a submachine gun with a small per shot number applies more debuff than a hard hitting slow weapon with the same affix.
  3. You can only carry one Protective perk and one Elemental perk per run, so decide which element you are building around inside the first ten sectors rather than picking whatever drops.
  4. Scrap is a run currency spent at the Fabricator and it vanishes when the run ends, so empty your Scrap on weapon quality upgrades before the final boss rather than saving it.
  5. Tech and Tech Components are permanent and buy Tech Masteries between runs, so a failed run that banked Tech is still progress and is not wasted time.
