Destiny 2 Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Destiny 2 walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Destiny 2 is Bungie's shared-world looter shooter combining FPS gunplay with MMO-style progression, RPG buildcrafting, and some of gaming's best raid encounters. Three classes — Titan, Hunter, Warlock — each have multiple subclasses with unique supers, grenades, and class abilities. The game's seasonal model adds new story content, activities, and gear regularly. With the addition of Prismatic subclasses combining Light and Dark powers, and the conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga, Destiny 2 offers deep buildcrafting and challenging endgame content.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — The Tower

The main social hub where you access vendors (Banshee-44 for weapons, Zavala/Shaxx/Drifter for activities), the Vault (storage), postmaster, and seasonal vendors. Check bounties daily from each vendor for bonus XP. Xur visits on weekends with Exotic gear.

Level/Difficulty: All Power Levels Key Rewards: Vendor bounties, Xur Exotics (weekends), seasonal vendor content

What to Do in The Tower

  1. Learn light subclasses. Each class has access to Solar, Arc, Void, Stasis, Strand, and Prismatic subclasses. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Hunter as your starting role. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Complete the New Light quest line first — it introduces all core activities and rewards useful starter gear. New players should finish this before tackling endgame.
  4. Acquire your first weapons upgrade — Witherhoard or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand light subclasses fundamentals
  • Hunter selected and functional
  • The Tower main content cleared
  • Ready for Europa

Phase 2: Early Game — Europa

A frozen moon featuring the Beyond Light campaign, Stasis subclass unlock, and the Deep Stone Crypt raid. Bray Exoscience contains Empire Hunts. Variks provides quests for Stasis Fragment unlocks. Essential for Stasis progression.

Level/Difficulty: 1350+ Power Key Rewards: Stasis subclass, Deep Stone Crypt raid, Europa weapons, Exo Stranger quests

What to Do in Europa

  1. Work on exotic armor synergy. One Exotic armor piece can be equipped at a time. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Witherhoard if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Exotic ciphers from Xur (weekly quest) let you buy Exotics from the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk. Prioritize Witherhoard, Gjallarhorn, and Arbalest.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Dreaming City.
  5. Consider whether Titan might suit your playstyle better than Hunter.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • exotic armor synergy integrated into gameplay
  • Witherhoard acquired
  • Europa fully cleared
  • Ready for The Dreaming City

Phase 3: Mid Game — The Dreaming City

An endgame destination with a 3-week curse cycle that changes available content. Contains the Last Wish raid, Shattered Throne dungeon, and Ascendant challenges. One of the most beautiful and mysterious destinations.

Level/Difficulty: 1500+ Power Key Rewards: Last Wish raid, Shattered Throne dungeon, Dreaming City weapons, lore

What to Do in The Dreaming City

  1. Master raid mechanics. 6-player raids feature complex mechanics requiring communication and role assignment. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Gjallarhorn. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Infuse only when the power gap is 10+ — infusion costs Upgrade Modules. Small power bumps aren't worth the cost. Save infusion for significant upgrades.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in seasonal artifact for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • raid mechanics mastered
  • Gjallarhorn acquired or in progress
  • The Dreaming City fully cleared
  • Ready for Throne World

Phase 4: Late Game — Throne World

Savathun's personal dimension from The Witch Queen expansion. Contains the Vow of the Disciple raid, Wellspring activity, and Exotic weapon quests. The Witch Queen campaign is widely considered the best Destiny campaign.

Level/Difficulty: 1550+ Power Key Rewards: Witch Queen campaign, Vow of the Disciple raid, weapon crafting introduction

What to Do in Throne World

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Titan or Hunter with optimized gear.
  2. Gjallarhorn should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Champions (Anti-Barrier, Overload, Unstoppable) require matching mods from the seasonal artifact. Check which weapon types have Champion mods before loading into high-level content.
  4. mod system optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Neomuna.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Gjallarhorn upgraded to max
  • Throne World fully cleared
  • Ready for Neomuna

Phase 5: Endgame — Neomuna

A hidden city on Neptune from the Lightfall expansion. Contains the Root of Nightmares raid, Strand subclass unlock, and Terminal Overload activity. The neon-cyberpunk aesthetic is visually distinct from other destinations.

Level/Difficulty: 1750+ Power Key Rewards: Strand subclass, Root of Nightmares raid, Neomuna weapons

What to Do in Neomuna

  1. Neomuna tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Master difficulty adds Champions, locked loadout, and match game (shields require matching elements). Build specifically for each Master activity.
  3. The endgame loop: run Neomuna, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Strand Build for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where mod system mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Neomuna fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Dismantling Exotic weapons and armor — Exotics can be re-acquired from Collections but at a lower stat roll. Vault Exotic armor with high stat rolls; they're irreplaceable.
  • Ignoring the seasonal artifact Champion mods — high-level content (Nightfalls, Lost Sectors, raids) requires specific Champion counters that change each season. Check artifact mods weekly.
  • Building around Intellect for faster Supers — Super regen was nerfed and Intellect provides diminishing returns past 30. Resilience and Discipline provide far more value.
  • Running endgame content at minimum power level — being under-leveled means you deal less damage and take more. Grind to the recommended power level before attempting Master content.
  • Solo queuing for raids without watching a guide — raid mechanics are complex and not explained in-game. Watch a YouTube guide before your first attempt. LFG groups will teach patient newcomers.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Complete the New Light quest line first — it introduces all core activities and rewards useful starter gear. New players should finish this before tackling endgame.
  2. Exotic ciphers from Xur (weekly quest) let you buy Exotics from the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk. Prioritize Witherhoard, Gjallarhorn, and Arbalest.
  3. Infuse only when the power gap is 10+ — infusion costs Upgrade Modules. Small power bumps aren't worth the cost. Save infusion for significant upgrades.
  4. Champions (Anti-Barrier, Overload, Unstoppable) require matching mods from the seasonal artifact. Check which weapon types have Champion mods before loading into high-level content.
  5. Master difficulty adds Champions, locked loadout, and match game (shields require matching elements). Build specifically for each Master activity.
