EA's first football game after the FIFA name split launched on 29 September 2023 with Erling Haaland on the cover. The headline change is PlayStyles, 34 abilities drawn from Opta data that replace the old hidden trait system and decide how a player actually behaves on the ball. Ultimate Team added women players and Evolutions, which upgrade a card you already own instead of pushing you toward a better one in a pack.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
PlayStyles and PlayStyles+
There are 34 PlayStyles split across scoring, passing, ball control, defending, physical and goalkeeping. The plus tier of each is a stronger version, and only a small number of players in the game carry one.
HyperMotionV animation
Volumetric capture from real matches feeds the movement system, which is why acceleration types like Explosive, Lengthy and Controlled visibly run differently. It also drives ball physics on shots, crosses and deflections.
Ultimate Team Evolutions
An Evolution takes a card you already own and raises stats or grants a PlayStyle, provided the card meets entry rules such as a rating or position cap. Entering an Evolution makes the card untradeable permanently.
Chemistry links
Players earn up to three chemistry points from shared club, league and nation links, for a squad maximum of 33. Women footballers link by league and nation as normal, and to men who play for their affiliated club.
Custom tactics and player instructions
Custom tactics control build up speed, chance creation, defensive style, width and depth, while player instructions handle individual jobs like stay forward or cut inside. Five tactic slots can be swapped mid match with the D pad.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Finesse Shot | Adds curve and accuracy to curled shots, and the plus tier makes the far corner from the edge of the box a genuine percentage play. | Inside forwards cutting in from the wing and any striker who shoots from the edge of the area. |
| Power Shot | Increases the speed and power of the manually aimed power shot, fired with both bumpers and shoot. | Strikers with room outside the area and set piece style shots from distance. |
| Trivela | Improves outside of the foot passes and shots, which travel with an unusual curve that goalkeepers read badly. | Wide playmakers and any player whose weak foot rating makes normal switches unreliable. |
| Incisive Pass | Tightens through balls and line breaking passes, so the ball arrives in the channel at the speed you wanted rather than overhit into the keeper's hands. | Central attacking midfielders and deep playmakers feeding runners. |
| Rapid | Raises sprint speed while dribbling, which keeps a fast player fast with the ball at their feet instead of dropping to a jog. | Wingers running at full backs and counter attacking strikers. |
Finesse Shot: Adds curve and accuracy to curled shots, and the plus tier makes the far corner from the edge of the box a genuine percentage play. It is the single most valuable attacking PlayStyle in the game.
Power Shot: Increases the speed and power of the manually aimed power shot, fired with both bumpers and shoot. The animation is slow, so it needs space rather than a crowded box.
Trivela: Improves outside of the foot passes and shots, which travel with an unusual curve that goalkeepers read badly. It also lets a player deliver without adjusting their body first.
Incisive Pass: Tightens through balls and line breaking passes, so the ball arrives in the channel at the speed you wanted rather than overhit into the keeper's hands.
Rapid: Raises sprint speed while dribbling, which keeps a fast player fast with the ball at their feet instead of dropping to a jog. It is the PlayStyle that makes pace stats actually translate.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Old Trafford | Premier League | Full club licensing, authentic broadcast presentation |
| Anfield | Premier League | Authentic crowd and matchday presentation |
| Etihad Stadium | Premier League | Full licensing, wide pitch suited to wing play |
| Signal Iduna Park | Bundesliga | Distinct crowd presentation, Bundesliga licensing |
| Allianz Arena | Bundesliga | Clean camera sightlines, full Bayern licensing |
Old Trafford: Manchester United's fully licensed ground, scanned with authentic stands, tunnel and presentation. One of the most used venues in Career Mode and offline tournaments.
Anfield: Liverpool's ground with the Kop end recreated and the club's full presentation package. The tight touchlines make it a noticeably different feel from the wider modern stadiums.
Etihad Stadium: Manchester City's home ground, and the default venue for anyone starting a Career Mode with the strongest squad in the game. Wide pitch dimensions favour the 4-3-3 shapes.
Signal Iduna Park: Borussia Dortmund's stadium, home of the Yellow Wall stand and one of the most distinctive atmospheres in the Bundesliga selection.
Allianz Arena: Bayern Munich's home ground with its lit exterior panels and modern bowl. A common neutral pick for online friendlies because sightlines are clean at every camera angle.

Tips That Actually Matter
- PlayStyles beat raw ratings on a card. An 84 rated striker with Finesse Shot+ converts curled shots from the edge of the box more reliably than an 88 rated striker without it, because the plus tier adds curve and accuracy the base version does not.
- Power Shots are fired with both bumpers plus shoot and need manual aim, and the wind up is visibly longer than a normal shot. Take them from outside the area with space in front, never inside a crowded box where a defender closes you down mid animation.
- Evolutions are permanent and make the card untradeable the moment you start one. Read the entry requirements for rating, position and existing PlayStyle count before committing, and only evolve players you actually intend to keep.
- Chemistry maxes at 33 with three points per player. Icons count double for nation links and Heroes count double for league links, so one of each can hold together a squad drawn from four different leagues.
- In Career Mode, set training plans by position group rather than tinkering with individuals every week. Coach quality changes development speed directly, so paying for better coaching staff outperforms micromanaging sessions.
- Defending rewards jockeying and cutting passing lanes over sliding in. Hold the jockey trigger and shadow the ball carrier, and use second man press sparingly because it pulls a defender out of the block every time.
- Squad Battles and Rivals are the cheapest coin sources for a new Ultimate Team club. Clear the weekly Rivals games for guaranteed rewards before you spend anything on the transfer market.
- Acceleration type matters as much as the pace rating. Explosive players win the first three metres, Lengthy players win a forty metre chase, and a Lengthy centre back is the standard counter to an Explosive striker.
- Assign set piece takers manually in the tactics screen rather than letting the game pick by rating. The Dead Ball PlayStyle tightens free kick accuracy, and the highest rated player on the pitch is often not the one who has it.
- Keep one high pressing tactic and one drop deep counter tactic in separate slots and switch with the D pad mid match. Sticking with a single plan for ninety minutes is the most common way to lose a game you were winning at half time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying meta cards in the first weeks. Prices fall hard once promos flood the market, and the same player is often far cheaper a couple of months in.
- Comparing cards by overall rating alone and ignoring PlayStyles, which is how people end up with an expensive striker who cannot finish the way they play.
- Starting an Evolution on a card you planned to sell later. Evolved cards are untradeable, and there is no way to reverse it.
- Holding sprint constantly. Sprinting kills close control and stamina, and most defensive breakdowns come from a full back caught sprinting the wrong way.
- Leaving the default tactics untouched. The stock setups are passive, and a defensive line that sits too deep to press loses more online games than any individual skill gap.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did EA SPORTS FC 24 release?
29 September 2023, with Erling Haaland on the cover. It was the first title after EA ended the FIFA licensing deal, so the modes carried over but the branding changed.
How many PlayStyles are in the game?
34, grouped into scoring, passing, ball control, defending, physical and goalkeeping. Each has a stronger PlayStyles+ tier that only a handful of players carry.
Can women players link with men in Ultimate Team?
Yes. Women footballers link by league and nation like everyone else, and they also link to men who play for their affiliated club, which opens up squads that were impossible in earlier titles.
Is it still worth buying for online play?
Ultimate Team populations shift to the newest release every September, so older titles run thinner queues. Check EA's online services shutdown list for this title before buying purely for the online modes.
What formation should a new player use?
4-2-3-1. Two holding midfielders cover defensive mistakes while you learn, and the three attacking midfielders give you passing options without needing to time runs perfectly.
