Frontier's space sim models the Milky Way at 1:1 scale, roughly 400 billion star systems, and starts every commander in a Sidewinder with 1,000 credits. There is no story path, only careers: hauling cargo, hunting bounties, mining, exploring, sampling alien plant life on foot, or fighting Thargoids. The learning curve is the game itself, and most of it is systems knowledge rather than stick skill.

Combat in Elite Dangerous rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.

Core Combat Mechanics

1. Frame Shift Drive travel

One drive handles both hyperspace jumps between systems and supercruise inside them. Jump range depends on drive class, ship mass and fuel load, which is why explorers strip every module they can before a long trip.

Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.

2. Ship outfitting and rebuy

Modules come in classes 1 to 8 and grades A to E, with A the most capable and usually the heaviest on power draw. Insurance rebuy is roughly 5 percent of the total ship and module value and must be paid in cash.

Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.

3. Engineering modifications

Engineers upgrade modules in exchange for materials and reputation, and each one has an unlock condition. Felicity Farseer in Deciat handles Frame Shift Drives and is almost every commander's first stop, because jump range gates everything else you might want to do.

Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.

4. Exploration scanning

The Full Spectrum System Scanner maps a system's bodies from supercruise, while the Detailed Surface Scanner fires probes to map individual planets for a far larger payout. Mapping a terraformable or Earth like world is worth many times the basic discovery scan.

Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.

5. Background Simulation and Powerplay

Populated systems host minor factions whose influence shifts based on player missions, trade and combat. Powerplay 2.0 layers pledged Powers on top, with commanders earning merits for work inside their Power's territory and unlocking exclusive modules.

Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.

How These Mechanics Combine

Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:

Frame Shift Drive travel + Ship outfitting and rebuy

One drive handles both hyperspace jumps between systems and supercruise inside them. When combined with Ship outfitting and rebuy, modules come in classes 1 to 8 and grades a to e, with a the most capable and usually the heaviest on power draw. This combination is the core of every effective build.

Engineering modifications + Exploration scanning

Engineers upgrade modules in exchange for materials and reputation, and each one has an unlock condition. Paired with Exploration scanning, the full spectrum system scanner maps a system's bodies from supercruise, while the detailed surface scanner fires probes to map individual planets for a far larger payout. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.

Background Simulation and Powerplay as a Multiplier

Populated systems host minor factions whose influence shifts based on player missions, trade and combat. Powerplay 2.0 layers pledged Powers on top, with commanders earning merits for work inside their Power's territory and unlocking exclusive modules. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Background Simulation and Powerplay optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques

Damage Optimization

  1. Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
  2. Exploit Frame Shift Drive travel for maximum damage windows
  3. Chain Ship outfitting and rebuy and Engineering modifications for combo damage
  4. Use Exploration scanning to create openings

Survivability

  1. Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
  2. Unlock Felicity Farseer in Deciat before any other engineer. She needs exploration rank Scout and a donation of one Meta Alloy, and a grade 5 Increased Range Frame Shift Drive changes every other activity you will ever do.
  3. Position using Frame Shift Drive travel to control spacing
  4. Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort

Boss Combat

Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.

  • Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
  • Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
  • Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed

Common Combat Mistakes

  1. Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
  2. Ignoring Ship outfitting and rebuy: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
  3. Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
  4. Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
  5. Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Sol but will get you killed in Sagittarius A*.
