This EVE Online tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid turrets | Gallente brawlers that want to close and hold point, and Caldari railgun snipers sitting at range. | The Caldari and Gallente weapon line. |
| Energy turrets | Long deployments with no resupply, and fights against shield tanked targets weak to EM. | Amarr lasers. |
| Projectile turrets | Cap starved fits and artillery fleets built to delete one target per coordinated volley. | Minmatar guns. |
| Missiles | Pilots who want damage that lands regardless of tracking, and fits that pick a damage type per target. | Damage that flies to the target instead of needing turret tracking. |
| Drones | Multitasking in PvE, and ratting or mission running where you want damage without managing ammo. | Autonomous damage from your drone bay in light, medium, heavy and sentry sizes. |

Equipment Analysis
Hybrid turrets: The Caldari and Gallente weapon line. Blasters hit brutally hard at knife range, railguns trade that damage for reach, and both fire thermal and kinetic.
Energy turrets: Amarr lasers. Pulse for close work, beam for range, both firing EM and thermal with instant crystal swaps and negligible ammo consumption.
Projectile turrets: Minmatar guns. Autocannons up close and artillery for alpha volleys, and they draw almost no capacitor, freeing cap for tank and propulsion.
Missiles: Damage that flies to the target instead of needing turret tracking. Rockets and light missiles on frigates, heavy and heavy assault on cruisers, cruise and torpedoes on battleships.
Drones: Autonomous damage from your drone bay in light, medium, heavy and sentry sizes. They keep firing while you manage tackle and tank, and Gallente hulls build whole doctrines around them.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in EVE Online centers on Real time skill training and Security status zones. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Miner with Hybrid turrets is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Capacitor management builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- PvP combat pilot remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Industrialist is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Projectile turrets offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Hauler builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
Quick Picks by Situation
| Situation | Best Build | Best Gear | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall best | Miner | Hybrid turrets | Highest consistent performance |
| New player | Industrialist | Energy turrets | Most forgiving, teaches mechanics |
| Hard content | PvP combat pilot | Projectile turrets | Survivability when you need it |
| Group play | Explorer | Missiles | Utility and team support |
| Experienced player | Hauler | Drones | Unique challenge and high ceiling |
