Fallout 4 is Bethesda's open-world action RPG set in a post-nuclear Boston (the Commonwealth) where you emerge from a cryogenic vault 210 years after the Great War to find your kidnapped son. The game features an extensive perk system, base-building settlements, companion relationships, and four faction endings that dramatically alter the Commonwealth. With its modding community and ongoing DLC content (Far Harbor and Nuka-World), Fallout 4 offers hundreds of hours of exploration and combat.
Fallout 4 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order — what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Diamond City — Starting Area
The main settlement built inside Fenway Park. Contains key NPCs (Piper, Nick Valentine), multiple shops, a doctor, and access to main story quests. The closest thing to a safe hub in the Commonwealth.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Level 10+ (recommended) |
| Key Rewards | Piper companion, Nick Valentine access, vendors, home plate |
| Recommended Build | Heavy Gunner |
| Key Equipment | Deliverer |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of VATS targeting — this is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Goodneighbor.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Goodneighbor — Early Game
The Commonwealth's seedy underside — a settlement run by ghouls and outcasts. Home to Hancock (companion), the Memory Den, and the Silver Shroud quest. More interesting NPC interactions than Diamond City.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Level 15+ |
| Key Rewards | Hancock companion, Memory Den quests, unique vendors, Silver Shroud quest |
| Recommended Build | Heavy Gunner |
| Key Equipment | Deliverer |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering settlement building — it's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Deliverer if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in The Glowing Sea.
The Glowing Sea — Mid Game
The irradiated crater from the nuclear bomb that hit the Commonwealth. Extremely hostile with high radiation, Deathclaws, and Radscorpions. Requires Power Armor or heavy Rad resistance. Contains Virgil's cave (main story critical) and rare loot.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Level 25+ (Power Armor required) |
| Key Rewards | Virgil quest progression, X-01 Power Armor spawn, rare legendary drops |
| Recommended Build | Stealth Sniper |

What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Overseer's Guardian becomes accessible here — prioritize getting it.
- Master companion affinity for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Institute — Late Game
The hidden underground facility of the game's most advanced faction. Accessed during the main story. Pristine white labs, synth production, and the truth about your son. Your choices here determine the game's ending.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Main story progression |
| Key Rewards | Main story progression, Institute weapons/armor, faction choice |
| Recommended Build | Stealth Sniper |
| Key Equipment | Overseer's Guardian |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Overseer's Guardian should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- perk chart mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Far Harbor.
Far Harbor — Endgame
A DLC island off the coast of Maine with fog, Trappers, and a conflict between three factions. The best Fallout 4 story content with meaningful choices. Contains unique weapons, armor, and the Nucleus (Children of Atom base).
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Level 25+ (DLC) |
| Key Rewards | Best story DLC, unique weapons, faction quests, new settlement locations |
| Recommended Build | Stealth Sniper |
| Key Equipment | Overseer's Guardian |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Explosives Expert for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order — Diamond City → Goodneighbor → The Glowing Sea → Institute → Far Harbor. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner — Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment — Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough — Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush — Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
