Fallout 76 Walkthrough: Start to Endgame

Step-by-step Fallout 76 walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

Researched and editorially reviewed. Updated .

Fallout 76 is Bethesda's online Appalachia, a shared open world set 25 years after the bombs fell. After a rough 2018 launch it added human NPCs, expansions like Wastelanders and The Pitt, and a strong build crafting endgame.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Vault 76 and Flatwoods)

The starting area where you leave the vault and learn survival, CAMP and crafting basics.

Level/Difficulty: 1 to 10 Key Rewards: Starter gear, first quests, basic recipes

What to Do in Vault 76 and Flatwoods

  1. Learn SPECIAL and perk cards. Each SPECIAL stat holds perk cards you slot and upgrade, so your card loadout defines your damage, defense and utility. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Heavy Gunner power armor as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Choose one damage lane such as Commando or Heavy Gunner early and stack the matching perk cards before branching.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Gatling Plasma or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand SPECIAL and perk cards fundamentals
  • Heavy Gunner power armor selected and functional
  • Vault 76 and Flatwoods main content cleared
  • Ready for The Whitespring

Phase 2: Early Game (The Whitespring)

A grand resort with vendors, a bunker and frequent events near the center of the map.

Level/Difficulty: 20 plus Key Rewards: Gold bullion vendors, plans, event loot

What to Do in The Whitespring

  1. Work on Public and private worlds. You can play on shared public servers or pay for private worlds where only invited friends join you. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Gatling Plasma if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Place your CAMP near water and resource nodes so your extractors and benches stay supplied.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Mire.
  5. Consider whether Commando automatic rifles might suit your playstyle better than Heavy Gunner power armor.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Public and private worlds integrated into gameplay
  • Gatling Plasma acquired
  • The Whitespring fully cleared
  • Ready for The Mire

Phase 3: Mid Game (The Mire)

A swampy high level region full of tough enemies and Brotherhood story content.

Level/Difficulty: 35 plus Key Rewards: Strong loot, story quests, rare spawns

What to Do in The Mire

  1. Master CAMP base building. Your portable CAMP lets you build a home, crafting benches and vendors almost anywhere in Appalachia. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward The Fixer rifle. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Hunt the Unyielding armor roll if you go Bloodied, since the low health bonus drives that whole build.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Nuke launch endgame for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • CAMP base building mastered
  • The Fixer rifle acquired or in progress
  • The Mire fully cleared
  • Ready for Cranberry Bog

Phase 4: Late Game (Cranberry Bog)

The highest level open zone, home to the Scorchbeast Queen nuke event.

Level/Difficulty: 40 plus Key Rewards: Legendary gear, Scorchbeast Queen, top tier mobs

What to Do in Cranberry Bog

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Commando automatic rifles or Heavy Gunner power armor with optimized gear.
  2. The Fixer rifle should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Join public nuke runs at the Scorchbeast Queen for the best legendary drop density in the game.
  4. Legendary gear grinding optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The Pitt expansion.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • The Fixer rifle upgraded to max
  • Cranberry Bog fully cleared
  • Ready for The Pitt expansion

Phase 5: Endgame (The Pitt expansion)

The Pitt expansion is the endgame zone with the hardest challenges.

Level/Difficulty: Expert Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades

What to Do in The Pitt expansion

  1. The Pitt expansion tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Keep a deep Stimpak and disease cure stash, since ammo and healing carry events more than raw level.
  3. The endgame loop: run The Pitt expansion, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with VATS Crit sniper for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Legendary gear grinding mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • The Pitt expansion fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Spreading perk cards across many weapon types so no damage lane hits its breakpoints.
  • Building a CAMP far from water and resources, then struggling to keep extractors fed.
  • Going Bloodied without Unyielding armor and dying constantly for no damage payoff.
  • Hoarding junk over the carry limit instead of stashing it and crafting on demand.
  • Skipping nuke events and grinding low level zones for legendaries that rarely roll well.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Choose one damage lane such as Commando or Heavy Gunner early and stack the matching perk cards before branching.
  2. Place your CAMP near water and resource nodes so your extractors and benches stay supplied.
  3. Hunt the Unyielding armor roll if you go Bloodied, since the low health bonus drives that whole build.
  4. Join public nuke runs at the Scorchbeast Queen for the best legendary drop density in the game.
  5. Keep a deep Stimpak and disease cure stash, since ammo and healing carry events more than raw level.
