Fish Idle 2: Underwater Mystery is a free to play idle fishing arcade from Multicast, released on Steam on November 15, 2024 with 30 achievements. You steer a boat toward schools of fish that bite automatically on approach, sell the catch, and pour the profit into upgrades and passive income. Steam reviews sit at Mixed, and the actual depth lives in the economy screens rather than in the fishing.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Automatic fishing on approach
You never cast or time a bite. Fish start biting as soon as the boat gets close enough, so the active skill is positioning and route choice rather than any fishing minigame.
Boat steering and obstacles
Moment to moment play is steering toward schools while avoiding hazards. Boat speed and defence are both upgradeable stats, which tells you the obstacles do real damage.
Idle Fish Farm
The passive income system. You invest earnings into the farm and it generates returns while you are doing something else, which supplies most of the idle half of the game.
Bots Shop
You hire hunter, fisher and cargo ships that fish and deliver catch without you. Delivery bots are usually worth more early than fishing bots, because hauling is the bottleneck before catch rate is.
Currency Exchange
A day trading screen where you buy and sell currency against a moving market. It is optional, and it is the one system that rewards attention rather than idle time.
For a deeper dive into how these systems interact, see our Fish Idle 2: Underwater Mystery combat guide.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Fishing speed | Raises how quickly fish are landed once they bite and gates access to rarer species. | Early progression, where catch rate is the direct limit on your income. |
| Storage capacity | Increases the maximum weight the boat carries before you have to return and sell. | Cutting round trips once catch rate has outgrown the size of your hold. |
| Boat speed | Cuts travel time between schools and back to the seller. | Long routes and any point where travel eats more of the session than fishing does. |
| Boat defence | Survivability against hazards and boss encounters. | Boss encounters and pushing into new waters ahead of your income curve. |
| Multi-line fishing rod | Multi line rods hook more than one fish at a time, multiplying catch rate rather than adding a flat amount to it. | The mid game, where a multiplier is worth more than another tier on a single stat. |
Fishing speed: Raises how quickly fish are landed once they bite and gates access to rarer species. It is the closest thing the game has to a damage stat.
Storage capacity: Increases the maximum weight the boat carries before you have to return and sell. Every trip back to sell is time not spent fishing.
Boat speed: Cuts travel time between schools and back to the seller. Its value scales with distance, so it matters more the further out you push.
Boat defence: Survivability against hazards and boss encounters. Neglect it and a boss fight becomes a stalemate you cannot finish.
Multi-line fishing rod: Multi line rods hook more than one fish at a time, multiplying catch rate rather than adding a flat amount to it.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Starting lighthouse waters | First session | Starting currency, first upgrade tiers |
| Fish Kingdoms | Early to late game | Kingdom upgrades, income multipliers |
| Idle Fish Farm | Once you have surplus currency | Passive income, offline earnings |
| Black Market | Mid game | Attack power, fishing speed upgrades |
| Winter waters | Late game | Winter coins, winter market upgrades |
Starting lighthouse waters: The opening area around the lighthouse. Low value fish, few hazards, and the place where you fund your first upgrades before anything else opens up.
Fish Kingdoms: The aquatic territories you manage and upgrade as the central progression track. Kingdom upgrades are what the Black Market exists to sell you.
Idle Fish Farm: A passive income screen rather than a fishing spot. Investment here pays out while you are away, which is why a session often opens with money already waiting.
Black Market: Where Fish Kingdom upgrades are bought, weighted toward attack power and fishing speed. Prices scale steeply, so it rewards saving over dribbling out purchases.
Winter waters: A later cold biome with its own currency and its own market. Progression there runs on winter coins rather than on your main balance.
See our maps & locations guide for detailed area breakdowns and our walkthrough for the optimal progression path.
Tips That Actually Matter
- The first goal is automation, not income. Everything gets easier once bots and the Idle Fish Farm earn while you are not steering, so prioritise the upgrades that remove you from the loop over the ones that make you personally faster.
- Delivery bots outperform fishing bots early. Hauling catch back to sell is the bottleneck before catch rate is, so a bot that carries beats a bot that fishes until your hold upgrades have caught up.
- Multi line rods multiply catch rate rather than adding to it. When the choice is a multi line upgrade or another tier of flat fishing speed, the multiplier is almost always the better purchase.
- Storage capacity and boat speed solve the same problem from opposite ends. If travel eats the session, buy speed; if you are heading back to sell before a school is exhausted, buy storage.
- Boat defence looks skippable right up until a boss encounter. Pushing into new waters underdefended means fights you cannot finish, which costs far more time than the upgrade would have.
- The Currency Exchange is the one system rewarding attention in a game built on ignoring it. Buying low and selling into spikes is genuine income, but it stays optional and the game works fine untouched.
- Hold on to Roe rather than trading it at the first opportunity. It is the more valuable exchange item and what it buys later is worth more than the early shop is offering for it.
- Ship heat capacity is a low priority purchase next to fishing speed and hauling. Buy it once the cheaper high impact upgrades are already several tiers deep.
- Treat the Black Market as the throughput and combat store rather than a general shop, since it concentrates on attack power and fishing speed. Save for its tiers instead of spreading currency thinly across everything.
- Winter waters run on winter coins and a separate market. Do not assume your main balance carries across; plan a dedicated push to build the second currency once that biome opens.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Grinding manually long after automation is available. The design intends the boat to become a management screen, and steering every catch by hand caps income at the length of your attention span.
- Crafting every tier of every item the moment it unlocks. Only craft what raises efficiency, because currency spent on dead end tiers is currency not spent on a multiplier.
- Spreading currency evenly across every upgrade. Steep price scaling means one line taken several tiers deep outperforms five lines taken one tier each.
- Selling Roe at the first opportunity. It is a premium exchange item and the early trades available for it are poor value next to what it buys later.
- Pushing into new waters with no defence upgrades. Hazards and bosses in later biomes stall you completely, and retreating costs more time than the upgrade would have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Fish Idle 2 free?
Yes, it is free to play on Steam, released on November 15, 2024 by Multicast. There is a separate free Prologue: Fish idle 2 and a paid Welcome Pack DLC.
Do you play actively or does it idle for you?
Both. You steer the boat toward schools during active play, while the Idle Fish Farm and hired bots keep earning when you are away. Progression assumes you use both halves.
What should you upgrade first?
Fishing speed and hauling capacity, then bots. Reaching the point where catching and delivering happen without you is worth more than any single stat increase you can buy early.
Is there combat?
There are hazards and boss encounters, which is why boat defence and attack power exist as upgrade lines. It is not a combat game, but you cannot ignore those stats when pushing into new waters.
How long does it take to finish?
There is no fixed ending. The game carries 30 Steam achievements and progression continues through the Fish Kingdoms, the winter biome and the market systems, so completion is measured in achievements rather than a credits roll.
