Netmarble Neo put Game of Thrones: Kingsroad into Steam Early Access on 26 March 2025 and released it on 21 May 2025 as a free to play action RPG. You play an invented character, the bastard heir of House Tyre, whose siblings died at the Red Wedding, and the story fills gaps around Season 4 of the HBO show. Combat is fully manual, with light and heavy attacks, dodging and parrying rather than automated fighting.
Combat in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Three fixed classes
Knight, Sellsword and Assassin are the only classes, and each is styled after a show character: the Knight after Jaime Lannister, the Sellsword after Tormund, the Assassin after Arya Stark. Class choice sets your weapon families and skill set, not your story.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Manual dodge and parry combat
Attacks are driven by real time light and heavy inputs, with dodging and parrying handled by the player rather than an auto battle toggle. Netmarble has published guidance on clearing content without parrying, so dodge only play stays viable.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Weapon swapping mid fight
Each class carries two main weapons plus one ranged weapon and can switch between them during a fight. The 2026 roadmap goes further and gives each weapon its own skill set with independent slots and cooldowns.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Set Research passive bonuses
Feeding unused gear from a set into Set Research raises that set level and grants stat effects without wearing the pieces. Reaching a breakthrough stage lets you equip one secondary set effect on top of whatever you are actually wearing.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. World Level difficulty scaling
Raising World Level increases enemy difficulty and reward quality, but it does not improve rewards from one time content. The January 2026 update added Hedge Knight III, which asks for over 280,000 Momentum before it will let you in.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Three fixed classes + Manual dodge and parry combat
Knight, Sellsword and Assassin are the only classes, and each is styled after a show character: the Knight after Jaime Lannister, the Sellsword after Tormund, the Assassin after Arya Stark. When combined with Manual dodge and parry combat, attacks are driven by real time light and heavy inputs, with dodging and parrying handled by the player rather than an auto battle toggle. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Weapon swapping mid fight + Set Research passive bonuses
Each class carries two main weapons plus one ranged weapon and can switch between them during a fight. Paired with Set Research passive bonuses, feeding unused gear from a set into set research raises that set level and grants stat effects without wearing the pieces. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
World Level difficulty scaling as a Multiplier
Raising World Level increases enemy difficulty and reward quality, but it does not improve rewards from one time content. The January 2026 update added Hedge Knight III, which asks for over 280,000 Momentum before it will let you in. This system amplifies everything else. The better your World Level difficulty scaling optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your weapons to your role's stat priorities
- Exploit Three fixed classes for maximum damage windows
- Chain Manual dodge and parry combat and Weapon swapping mid fight for combo damage
- Use Set Research passive bonuses to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Clear every sub quest that pays skill points before pushing the main story. Skill points come from Guide Missions and sub quests rather than from levelling alone, so skipping side content leaves permanent gaps in your kit.
- Position using Three fixed classes to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and weapons for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Manual dodge and parry combat: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong weapons for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Castle Black but will get you killed in Storm's End.
