RobTop's Geometry Dash is a rhythm platformer where a single input, tap or hold, is the entire control scheme, and every obstacle kills instantly. Update 2.2 landed on Steam on 19 December 2023, adding the Swing gamemode, a free movement Platformer mode and the main level Dash. The real game is the level editor, which has produced millions of user levels including the Extreme Demons that take players months of attempts.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Stereo Madness)
The first main level and the game's tutorial in everything but name, introducing Cube and Ship at the slowest speed. Its three secret coins are gentle enough to be the first coins most players ever collect.
Level/Difficulty: Easy, 1 star Key Rewards: 3 secret coins, core timing basics
What to Do in Stereo Madness
- Learn One input rhythm timing. Everything is done with tap or hold, and each gamemode reinterprets that input differently. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Harder as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
- Practice Mode is not optional at any difficulty above about ten stars. Place checkpoints just before each hard section, learn the section in isolation, then remove checkpoints and run the level whole. Players who skip this stage plateau early.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade: Ship or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand One input rhythm timing fundamentals
- Harder selected and functional
- Stereo Madness main content cleared
- Ready for Clubstep
Phase 2: Early Game (Clubstep)
The fourteenth main level and the first Demon in the game, gating itself behind ten secret coins collected elsewhere. Its dark visuals hide obstacles deliberately, which is a large part of the difficulty.
Level/Difficulty: Easy Demon, 14 stars Key Rewards: 3 secret coins, first Demon completion
What to Do in Clubstep
- Work on Gamemode portals. Portals switch you between Cube, Ship, Ball, UFO, Wave, Robot, Spider and Swing mid level, often with a gravity or speed change at the same moment. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Ship if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Play with the music audible and reasonably loud. Levels are built against the track, so most timings can be heard a beat before the obstacle is visible, and muting the music makes an Insane level feel like an Extreme Demon.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Deadlocked.
- Consider whether Normal might suit your playstyle better than Harder.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Gamemode portals integrated into gameplay
- Ship acquired
- Clubstep fully cleared
- Ready for Deadlocked
Phase 3: Mid Game (Deadlocked)
The hardest of the classic main levels, with speed changes, dual sections and dense wave and ship segments. It is the only level in the game that awards 15 stars.
Level/Difficulty: Demon, 15 stars Key Rewards: 3 secret coins, the highest star value in the game
What to Do in Deadlocked
- Master Practice Mode checkpoints. Practice Mode lets you drop green checkpoints anywhere and respawn from them, which is how every hard level is learned. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Cube. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Frame pacing matters more than frame rate. A stable 60 frames per second is more consistent than a fluctuating 200, because physics behaviour and your muscle memory both depend on consistent frame timing.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Level editor and user levels for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Practice Mode checkpoints mastered
- Cube acquired or in progress
- Deadlocked fully cleared
- Ready for Dash
Phase 4: Late Game (Dash)
The only new main level added in Update 2.2, built around the Swing gamemode and set to an original MDK track. It doubles as the game's showcase for what 2.2's triggers can do.
Level/Difficulty: Insane, 12 stars Key Rewards: 3 secret coins, Swing gamemode practice
What to Do in Dash
- Finalize your build. You should be running Normal or Harder with optimized gear.
- Cube should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Learn gamemodes separately rather than grinding whole levels. Wave, Ship and Swing share almost no muscle memory with Cube, so playing dedicated wave practice levels improves faster than another hundred attempts at a full level.
- Platformer mode optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The Tower.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Cube upgraded to max
- Dash fully cleared
- Ready for The Tower
Phase 5: Endgame (The Tower)
The Platformer mode hub added in 2.2, holding the official platformer levels Tower, The Sewers, The Cellar and The Secret Hollow. It also gates several 2.2 secrets and shops behind progression.
Level/Difficulty: Platformer, Normal upward, awards Moons Key Rewards: Moons, shop currency, platformer coins
What to Do in The Tower
- The Tower tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Wave sections want short taps, not held inputs. New players hold through corridors and slam into the ceiling; the fix is to tap in quick bursts and let the diagonal do the work.
- The endgame loop: run The Tower, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Extreme Demon for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Platformer mode mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- The Tower fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Grinding full attempts on a hard level without ever entering Practice Mode
- Playing with the music muted and losing every audible timing cue
- Holding through wave corridors instead of tapping in short bursts
- Changing keyboard or input device partway through a Demon grind
- Chasing Demon levels before reliably clearing Insane rated levels
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
