Idling to Rule the Gods is a free to play incremental game from the German studio Shugasu, on Steam since 27 May 2016. The hook is Shadow Clones: you spend time creating copies of yourself, assign them to training, fighting and creating, and absorb their accumulated stats even while the game is closed. Progression runs through killing gods, starting with Hyperion, who each teach you a new Creation and hand over an achievement stack that multiplies your stats. Rebirths wipe your numbers and hand back multipliers, and past Tyrant Overlord Baal the game switches to Baal Power, Ultimate Beings and Challenges. It is text menus and spreadsheets rather than graphics, and it expects years rather than weekends.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Shadow Clone creation
Clones are the currency of every other system. They are made over time, capped at 1,000 during your first rebirth, and then assigned across training, fighting, creating and later Powersurge. Almost every submenu in the game asks for clones, so the whole optimisation problem is how to split a fixed clone pool.
Physical and Mystic training
Physical is trained through the Fist menu and Mystic through the Shield menu, both by parking clones there. Battle stat comes from fighting monsters and Creating stat from making more Shadow Clones, so the four stats each have their own dedicated grind rather than sharing one experience pool.
Rebirth multipliers
A rebirth resets your progress and returns a multiplier based on what you achieved. The wiki rule of thumb is to rebirth once the number in parentheses exceeds 100, which usually means you are ready to push a god or two further than last time.
God fights and Creations
Each god through Tyrant Overlord Baal teaches a Creation when killed. Hyperion gives Light, Diana gives Animal, Nephthys gives River, Cybele gives Mountain, Freya gives Town, Chronos gives Galaxy and Baal gives Universe. Diana unlocks Monuments, Nephthys lets you buy Creations with Divinity, Cybele unlocks the Divinity Generator and Freya unlocks Monument upgrades.
Divinity and Monuments
Divinity is the resource that feeds Monuments, which are permanent structures granting stat multipliers, including the Mighty Statue, the Mystic Garden and the Tomb of Gods. Once Cybele unlocks the Divinity Generator the resource becomes something you produce rather than something you scrape together.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Physical stat | Trained by assigning clones to the Fist menu. | Breaking early god health walls before Monuments exist |
| Mystic stat | Trained by assigning clones to the Shield menu. | Mid game gods and any build planning on the Mystic Garden monument |
| Battle stat | Earned by fighting monsters rather than by parking clones in a training menu. | Players who check in often enough to actually run fights |
| God Power | The currency unlocked by killing Hyperion. | Everything between the first god kill and your first rebirth |
| Baal Power | The post Baal currency, earned from P. | Endgame progression once the Creation list is complete |
Physical stat: Trained by assigning clones to the Fist menu. It is the most direct answer to a god you cannot damage and the stat most new players over invest in.
Mystic stat: Trained by assigning clones to the Shield menu. Neglecting it feels fine for the first several gods and then becomes the reason you stall.
Battle stat: Earned by fighting monsters rather than by parking clones in a training menu. It is the stat that scales with active fights instead of idle time.
God Power: The currency unlocked by killing Hyperion. It is the first real resource in the game and gates several early quality of life purchases.
Baal Power: The post Baal currency, earned from P.Baal fights at v1, v2 and upward. After Tyrant Overlord Baal there are no new Creations, so Baal Power replaces them as the progression track.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperion | First hours, before your first rebirth | Light Creation, God Power currency, Mouse pet, pets unlocked |
| Diana | Early rebirths | Animal Creation, Monuments system |
| Nephthys | Mid rebirths | River Creation, Creation purchasing with Divinity |
| Cybele | Mid to late rebirths | Mountain Creation, Divinity Generator |
| Tyrant Overlord Baal | Late game, many rebirths in | Universe Creation, Squirrel pet, access to P.Baal fights, Ultimate Beings and Challenge Points |
Hyperion: The first and weakest god, and the wall every new player hits. Killing him unlocks God Power, the Light Creation, the Mouse pet and most of the systems the game is actually about.
Diana: The god who unlocks Monuments, which is the point the game stops being pure stat training and starts being about permanent multipliers.
Nephthys: Unlocks the ability to buy Creations with Divinity rather than earning each one from a kill, which changes how Divinity is valued for the rest of the run.
Cybele: Unlocks the Divinity Generator and turns Divinity from a trickle into production. Freya follows later with Monument upgrades, and Chronos hands over the Galaxy Creation.
Tyrant Overlord Baal: The last god who teaches a Creation, handing over Universe and the Squirrel pet. Everything after him is P.Baal fights that pay Baal Power, plus Ultimate Beings and Challenges.

Tips That Actually Matter
- Your clone cap is 1,000 during the first rebirth, so early optimisation is entirely about how you split those 1,000 rather than how many you can make.
- Rebirth when the number in parentheses exceeds 100. Holding out for a bigger number usually costs more time than the extra multiplier returns.
- Physical trains in the Fist menu and Mystic in the Shield menu. Battle comes from monster fights and Creating from making clones, so none of the four stats share a source.
- Assign clones before you close the game. Offline progress runs on whatever assignment was active, so an idle clone pool is a wasted night.
- Hyperion is the hard gate. Until he dies you have no God Power, no Light Creation and no pets, so everything else can wait.
- Pets unlock after Hyperion and give permanent stat boosts through training. The Mouse comes from Hyperion and the Squirrel from Tyrant Overlord Baal.
- Creations are not just collectibles, they feed achievements that multiply your god stats and later supply the materials for Monuments.
- Build Monuments as soon as Diana unlocks them. The Mighty Statue and Mystic Garden multiply what you already have, which beats grinding more raw stat.
- Once Cybele gives you the Divinity Generator, treat Divinity as a production line rather than a savings account and keep it running.
- Challenges arrive after Baal and impose restricted goals for Challenge Points. They look like optional content but the points are a permanent power source.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring Mystic entirely because Physical carries the first few gods, then stalling hard on a god that needs both.
- Delaying the first rebirth for days because resetting feels like losing progress, when the multiplier is what makes progress possible.
- Leaving clones unassigned overnight, which throws away the offline gains the entire design is built around.
- Skipping pet training on the grounds that it is a side system, when pet bonuses are permanent and stack across rebirths.
- Trying to fight P. Baal versions before the clone cap and Monument multipliers can support Powersurge assignments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Idling to Rule the Gods free?
Yes, it is a free to play title from Shugasu, on Steam since 27 May 2016. There are optional purchases but the full progression through the god list is available without spending.
Does it progress while closed?
Yes. Shadow Clones keep training, fighting and creating while the game is shut, and you absorb their accumulated stats when you return. Assigning clones before you log off is the single most important habit.
When should I do my first rebirth?
The community rule is to rebirth once the number shown in parentheses is above 100. Practically that means once you can comfortably kill Hyperion and see the next god as reachable.
What happens after Tyrant Overlord Baal?
Baal is the last god that teaches a Creation, handing over Universe. After him you fight P.Baal versions at v1, v2 and upward for Baal Power, and you unlock Ultimate Beings, Powersurge clone assignments and Challenges that pay Challenge Points.
How long is this game?
Years, not hours. It is a text menu incremental with a stat curve designed around multi week rebirth cycles, and the endgame Baal Power grind has no defined finish line.
