Idling to Rule the Gods is a free to play incremental game from the German studio Shugasu, on Steam since 27 May 2016. The hook is Shadow Clones: you spend time creating copies of yourself, assign them to training, fighting and creating, and absorb their accumulated stats even while the game is closed. Progression runs through killing gods, starting with Hyperion, who each teach you a new Creation and hand over an achievement stack that multiplies your stats. Rebirths wipe your numbers and hand back multipliers, and past Tyrant Overlord Baal the game switches to Baal Power, Ultimate Beings and Challenges. It is text menus and spreadsheets rather than graphics, and it expects years rather than weekends.
Idling to Rule the Gods features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hyperion | First hours, before your first rebirth | Light Creation, God Power currency, Mouse pet, pets unlocked | Mystic Training clones |
| 2 | Diana | Early rebirths | Animal Creation, Monuments system | Mystic Training clones |
| 3 | Nephthys | Mid rebirths | River Creation, Creation purchasing with Divinity | Physical Training clones |
| 4 | Cybele | Mid to late rebirths | Mountain Creation, Divinity Generator | Physical Training clones |
| 5 | Tyrant Overlord Baal | Late game, many rebirths in | Universe Creation, Squirrel pet, access to P.Baal fights, Ultimate Beings and Challenge Points | Physical Training clones |
Hyperion: Starting Area
The first and weakest god, and the wall every new player hits. Killing him unlocks God Power, the Light Creation, the Mouse pet and most of the systems the game is actually about.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | First hours, before your first rebirth |
| Key Rewards | Light Creation, God Power currency, Mouse pet, pets unlocked |
| Recommended Build | Mystic Training clones |
| Key Equipment | Mystic stat |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Shadow Clone creation. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Diana.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Diana: Early Game
The god who unlocks Monuments, which is the point the game stops being pure stat training and starts being about permanent multipliers.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Early rebirths |
| Key Rewards | Animal Creation, Monuments system |
| Recommended Build | Mystic Training clones |
| Key Equipment | Mystic stat |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Physical and Mystic training. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Mystic stat if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Nephthys.
Nephthys: Mid Game
Unlocks the ability to buy Creations with Divinity rather than earning each one from a kill, which changes how Divinity is valued for the rest of the run.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid rebirths |
| Key Rewards | River Creation, Creation purchasing with Divinity |
| Recommended Build | Physical Training clones |
| Key Equipment | Mystic stat |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Physical stat becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Rebirth multipliers for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Cybele: Late Game
Unlocks the Divinity Generator and turns Divinity from a trickle into production. Freya follows later with Monument upgrades, and Chronos hands over the Galaxy Creation.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late rebirths |
| Key Rewards | Mountain Creation, Divinity Generator |
| Recommended Build | Physical Training clones |
| Key Equipment | Physical stat |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Physical stat should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Divinity and Monuments mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Tyrant Overlord Baal.
Tyrant Overlord Baal: Endgame
The last god who teaches a Creation, handing over Universe and the Squirrel pet. Everything after him is P.Baal fights that pay Baal Power, plus Ultimate Beings and Challenges.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late game, many rebirths in |
| Key Rewards | Universe Creation, Squirrel pet, access to P.Baal fights, Ultimate Beings and Challenge Points |
| Recommended Build | Physical Training clones |
| Key Equipment | Physical stat |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Powersurge clones for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Hyperion → Diana → Nephthys → Cybele → Tyrant Overlord Baal. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
