Killing Floor 2 is Tripwire Interactive's wave based co-op shooter for six players, fighting genetically engineered Zeds across Short, Medium and Long matches. Ten perks level independently to 25, each offering a skill choice every five levels and a Zed Time ability at the top. Zed Time is the hook: kills randomly drop the world into slow motion while you keep moving at full speed.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Berserker
Berserker is a top-performing option in Killing Floor 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | AA-12 Auto Shotgun | Support's top tier automatic shotgun, able to erase a pack of Clots or strip a Scrake at close range. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Wave structure and boss wave | Matches run Short at 4 waves, Medium at 7 or Long at 10, and every length ends with a boss wave. |
How to Play Berserker
Berserker focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: AA-12 Auto Shotgun does the damage and Wave structure and boss wave keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Commando
Commando is a strong option in Killing Floor 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | M14 EBR | The Sharpshooter's semi automatic rifle, accurate enough for headshot decapitations from one side of a map to the other. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Zed Time | Kills carry a chance to trigger a short slow motion window, with better odds on close kills and on headshots at range. |
How to Play Commando
Commando focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair M14 EBR with Zed Time and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Support
Support is a strong option in Killing Floor 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | RPG-7 | Demolitionist rocket launcher with enough single target damage to stagger and finish a Fleshpound. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Trader time and dosh | Between waves a trader pod opens, everyone is healed to full, and you spend dosh on weapons, armour, ammunition and grenades. |
How to Play Support
Support focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Trader time and dosh covers the gap RPG-7 leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Field Medic
Field Medic is a specialized option in Killing Floor 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Zweihander | A heavy two handed sword for Berserker with the reach to hit several Zeds per swing and the block to survive a bad position. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Perk levelling to 25 | Each of the ten perks levels separately and offers a choice between two skills at levels 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25. |
How to Play Field Medic
Field Medic focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Perk levelling to 25 rather than raw numbers, and Zweihander is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Gunslinger
Gunslinger is a specialized option in Killing Floor 2.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | HMTech-401 Assault Rifle | The Field Medic's high tier rifle, firing healing darts alongside normal rounds so the medic still contributes damage while topping people up. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Weapon weight limit | Every weapon carries a weight value against a limited carry capacity, so a loadout is a budget rather than a shopping list. |
How to Play Gunslinger
Gunslinger focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: HMTech-401 Assault Rifle and Weapon weight limit pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Commando: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Berserker once you understand core mechanics and have access to AA-12 Auto Shotgun
- Keep a Support setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Gunslinger for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Armour is the cheapest survivability in the game and it refills every trader. Buying a full armour bar before upgrading a weapon keeps more players alive through wave 7 than any single tier 4 purchase does.
- Scrakes are a headshot problem and Fleshpounds are a stagger problem. Decapitating a Scrake with an M14 EBR or a Gunslinger revolver removes it outright, while a Fleshpound enraged mid corridor kills whoever happens to be closest.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
