Killing Floor 2 is Tripwire Interactive's wave based co-op shooter for six players, fighting genetically engineered Zeds across Short, Medium and Long matches. Ten perks level independently to 25, each offering a skill choice every five levels and a Zed Time ability at the top. Zed Time is the hook: kills randomly drop the world into slow motion while you keep moving at full speed.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Armour is the cheapest survivability in the game and it refills every trader

Armour is the cheapest survivability in the game and it refills every trader. Buying a full armour bar before upgrading a weapon keeps more players alive through wave 7 than any single tier 4 purchase does.

2. Scrakes are a headshot problem and Fleshpounds are a stagger problem

Scrakes are a headshot problem and Fleshpounds are a stagger problem. Decapitating a Scrake with an M14 EBR or a Gunslinger revolver removes it outright, while a Fleshpound enraged mid corridor kills whoever happens to be closest.

3. Zed Time triggers more often on long range headshots and on kills within about three metres, so the way to see more of it is deliberate shooting rather than spraying

Zed Time triggers more often on long range headshots and on kills within about three metres, so the way to see more of it is deliberate shooting rather than spraying. Commando is the only perk that extends the window repeatedly.

4. Everyone is healed to full at the start of trader time regardless of how the wave ended, which means the last few seconds of a wave are never worth dying over

Everyone is healed to full at the start of trader time regardless of how the wave ended, which means the last few seconds of a wave are never worth dying over. Plan the purchase before the wave finishes.

5. Dosh transfers between players

Dosh transfers between players. Giving the Field Medic 400 dosh on wave 2 so they reach the next HMTech weapon pays back across the whole match far better than the same money spent on your own upgrade.

6. Sirens scream, and the scream destroys grenades, rockets and player armour at range

Sirens scream, and the scream destroys grenades, rockets and player armour at range. Kill them with hitscan weapons first and never point a Demolitionist projectile at a group that contains one.

7. Weld doors during trader time, not mid wave

Weld doors during trader time, not mid wave. A welded door funnels spawns into a route your team already covers, and Support welds faster and stronger than any other perk.

8. Off perk weapons still cost weight but lose your perk's damage bonuses, so carrying a favourite from another class usually makes you weaker rather than more flexible

Off perk weapons still cost weight but lose your perk's damage bonuses, so carrying a favourite from another class usually makes you weaker rather than more flexible. Spend that weight on ammunition and armour.

9. Boss selection is random between Hans Volter, the Patriarch, King Fleshpound, the Abomination and the Matriarch, so keep a full magazine of your heaviest weapon in reserve for the boss wave instead of burning it on trash

10. On Hell on Earth the team has to kite rather than hold

On Hell on Earth the team has to kite rather than hold. Large Zeds arrive in groups from wave 5, and a static squad in a small room ends up surrounded by Fleshpounds with nowhere left to fall back to.

Advanced Strategies

Role Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Berserker (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Wave structure and boss wave combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: AA-12 Auto Shotgun
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Commando (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: M14 EBR
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Killing Floor 2's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Wave structure and boss wave + Zed Time: Matches run Short at 4 waves, Medium at 7 or Long at 10, and every length ends with a boss wave. Combined with Zed Time, kills carry a chance to trigger a short slow motion window, with better odds on close kills and on headshots at range.

Trader time and dosh + Perk levelling to 25: Between waves a trader pod opens, everyone is healed to full, and you spend dosh on weapons, armour, ammunition and grenades. When paired with Perk levelling to 25, each of the ten perks levels separately and offers a choice between two skills at levels 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25.

Weapon weight limit scaling: Every weapon carries a weight value against a limited carry capacity, so a loadout is a budget rather than a shopping list. Off perk weapons cost the same weight while giving none of your perk's damage bonuses.

Weapons Efficiency

WeaponBest Use CaseWhy
AA-12 Auto ShotgunHolding a doorway on Suicidal and Hell on Earth.Support's top tier automatic shotgun, able to erase a pack of Clots or strip a Scrake at close range.
M14 EBRKilling Scrakes and Husks before they close the distance. The Sharpshooter's semi automatic rifle, accurate enough for headshot decapitations from one side of a map to the other.
RPG-7Boss waves and Fleshpound heavy spawns on Long matches.Demolitionist rocket launcher with enough single target damage to stagger and finish a Fleshpound.
ZweihanderBerserkers kiting large Zeds away from the rest of the squad.A heavy two handed sword for Berserker with the reach to hit several Zeds per swing and the block to survive a bad position.
HMTech-401 Assault RifleMedics who need to hold their own from wave 8 onward. The Field Medic's high tier rifle, firing healing darts alongside normal rounds so the medic still contributes damage while topping people up.

Location Efficiency

Burning Paris (Any difficulty, ideal for learning): A wrecked Paris street from the game's launch lineup, with a handful of strong interiors and long open stretches between them. The map most teams learn the fundamentals on.

Biotics Lab (Hard and above): Tight laboratory corridors where Support welding and Berserker blocking both pay off, and where a Siren scream is far more dangerous than usual.

Outpost (Any difficulty): A snowbound military base with long exterior sightlines and cramped interiors, rewarding teams that can switch between kiting outside and holding inside.

Black Forest (Hard and above): Wooded German setting split across several separate buildings, which makes getting isolated easy and rejoining the team much harder than it looks.

Nuked (Suicidal and Hell on Earth): An irradiated test site with wide open ground. Maps like this punish slow perks and reward anyone who can shoot while walking backwards.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Skipping armour to save for a tier 4 weapon, then dying on wave 5 with full pockets.
  2. Firing a rocket into a group containing a Siren and losing both the projectile and the damage.
  3. Enraging a Fleshpound with body shots instead of waiting for a clean stagger.
  4. Wandering off alone on open maps like Nuked where nobody can cover you.
  5. Levelling a fresh perk on Suicidal, where the damage bonuses you have not earned yet get the team killed.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Armour is the cheapest survivability in the game and it refills every trader. Buying a full armour bar before upgrading a weapon keeps more players alive through wave 7 than any single tier 4 purchase does.

  • Start with Commando, switch to Berserker when ready
  • Invest in AA-12 Auto Shotgun above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Burning Paris → Biotics Lab → Outpost → Black Forest → Nuked. See our maps guide
  • Wave structure and boss wave + Zed Time together are stronger than either alone
